Album Review

In the rap world circa the early 21st century, it's quite apparent that most of the genre's chart-topping artists are often too serious for their own good. In fact, many completely overlook the fact that early notable rap acts weren't afraid to have some good old-fashioned fun. But there are some exceptions to these modern day hip-hop rules, such as the Seattle trio the Saturday Knights. As evidenced by their 2008 full-length debut, Mingle, the group looks to outside the rap community to help create a unique spin on all the rhymin' and jivin' — the Muscle Shoals Horns, the Dap-Kings (who appeared on Amy Winehouse's Back to Black), Jack Endino, and even Soundgarden's Kim Thayil all drop by. Just give a listen to such standouts as "45," "Dog Park," "I Go," and the part hip-hop/part garage rocker "The Gospel," and you'll find that the Saturday Knights have created one of the top party albums of 2008. Mingle offers a much needed alternative to all the "tough guy" hip-hop that seems to have become the standard.

Album of the Year

History repeats itself all the time; things just sound and look a little different. If you watch closely and follow your heart you may find yourself on the ground flour of a musical movement. In the late 80's rock music was all Warrant, Poison, and a million other bands that sounded just like them but watered down. The record industry took what was Rock-n-Roll and coined it "Glam-Rock" They beat that dead horses until the maggots came out. The audience/fans still consumed what was played on the airwaves and MTV but they are secretly sic of Glam Rock and yearn for something more. Flash forward to the end of the decade: It's late 1989 a friend hands you a copy of a little Rock-n-Roll album from a small independent record label called Sub Pop. The music, it's different, it's dirty and it makes you feel alive when you listen like no record has in recent time. The album is Bleach the band is Nirvana. The revolution begins!!! Nirvana isn't alone many other great band ride this wave. Things go well for a couple years a whole new music community is gathering around this movement. The live shows are incredible! You feel like you belong to something important. Then… The industry coins it "Grunge"...but it's still great!!! A couple years later It's still Good! but it’s getting crazy a bazillion bands are moving to Seattle they want to be part of this movement...a couple years later it's feeling watered down...the record/radio industry keeps pumping out bands that sound something like rehashed Eddie Kurt Soundgarden Sandwiches...they whip that horse....it begins to stumble… still beating it the audience begins to yearn… the horse that is Grunge or Glam Rock or what have you it falls, it always does…... yet there is hope!!! Honest Rock-n-Roll will live to fight another day. It’s now 2008, history is repeating itself again but replace Glam Rock with Glam Rap. MTV, BET, the record industry they all have beaten the Bling Bling horse of hip-hop severely and it’s stumbling. The audience yearns once again for something fresh. Flash forward: If your lucky a friend will hand you a shiny blue Hip-Hop album from a small independent record label called Light in The Attic. The music, it's different, it's dirty and it will make you feel alive when you listen like no record has in recent time. The album is Mingle the group is The Saturday Knights. Let it begin!!!

As a dynamic hip-hop scene began to surface in Seattle during the late 2000s, it was practically inevitable that a rap group like the Saturday Knights would rise to local prominence, basing their musical approach in sync with Seattle's internationally recognized hotbed of alternative/indie rock. Inspired by a diversity of rap and rock subgenres, including '60s psychedelia, power pop, '80s hip-hop, and indie rock, this lighthearted, tongue-in-cheek band — comprised of MCs Tilson and Barfly (of...
