iTunes Review
The Kings of ‘80s heavy metal release their first-ever live album and it’s packed with just about every song that made them a household name. Def Lep were known as an impeccable studio band who labored for months to perfect each track. Yet this live album proves the band can reproduce it on stage. Songs from High ‘n’ Dry, Pyromania, Hysteria, Adrenalize and Songs From the Sparkle Lounge combine for a magical force. “Bringing On the Heartbreak” proves everyone in the audience knows the song from beginning to end. David Essex’s spooky tune “Rock On” retains its Def Lep flavor. Singer Joe Elliot brings his bloodcurdling howl for “Foolin’,” “Too Late for Love,” “Rock of Ages” and “Pour Some Sugar On Me.” The album finishes with three new studio tracks. “Kings of the World” is a powerful, dynamic tune centered at the piano before building to its climax. “It’s All About Believin’” features more of the classic Def Lep sound. Great songs and performances throughout.

Did It Really Take 30 Years?!?!?
Well here it is folks....After 30 years Def Leppard (one of rocks most successful bands) have finally released a live album. Sure they released a live video 20 years ago and 2009's "Pyromania" reissue dedicated an entire 2nd disc to a 1983 concert in Los Angeles but for the Def Leppard faithful this is the 1st full on dedicated live album and let me just say that it's great to hear. Recorded over several dates during their successful "Sparkle Lounge" tour of 08/09 this album is essentially a 2 disc best of set. For all the flak he takes from rock insiders, Joe Elliott's voice sounds amazing. Sure the man is now in his early fifties but he can still belt the chorus of "Photograph" like no one else on earth. The highlight of this 2 disc set is the acoustic to full electric version of "Bringin' On The Heartbreak", a top notch power ballad classic. The soft acoustic intro gives the listener the feeling that Def Leppard might just be going through the motions on this one but halfway through when Elliott howls off his trademark "NO!" and the full band kicks in, with amps turned up to 11, it sends a shiver down the spine that's hard to shake and of course what would "Bringin'" be if it wasn't followed up by a face melting rendition of "Switch 625"? Another highlight is the nearly eight minute run through of "Love Bites". An obvious concert staple, it is apparent that the millions of times they've had to play this live over the years has given them free reign to experiment with it and the dueling guitar solos between Vivian Campbell and Phil Collen that make up the last three minutes show you why Def Leppard are still one of the top live draws year after year. One of my only complaints (an yes it's minor but we all have them) is the version of "Rocket" included here. Over the years Def Leppard have performed blistering versions of this track that have run up to 12 minutes in length at some shows. These performances would again include some blistering guitar work from Collen and Campbell and would have been an amazing addition to this set but unfortunately we get the cookie-cutter 4 minute single version. Again a minor complaint but had to be voiced. That brings me to the 3 new studio tracks, Joe Elliott's "Undefeated, Rick Savage's "Kings Of The World", and Phil Collen's "It's All About Believin'". All three very uplifting in title but all three very different in style. "Undefeated" (the single) is obviously the track picked to be the hit here and with good reason. It offers everything we all have come to love about Def Leppard, hard hitting drums, great melody and vocals, and a killer riff. There has been word that they might try and open their 2011 gigs with this track and I can see that going over well. A classic Leppard track in the making. "Kings Of The World" however is a horse of a different color. Those that own "Songs From The Sparkle Lounge" will think back to the song "Love" off that album. Both tracks, written by Savage, are extremely Queen oriented in style and delivery. A lot of piano and very theatrical only to come in later and legitimize the whole song with guitar (something Queen was brilliant at). For the average Lep fan though this will take a few listens to absorb. The final new track is the Collen penned "It's All About Believin" and this may be the most poppy of the bunch. A fun feel good song that really makes you yearn for a full length release and soon. Upon first listen this was the tune that most will write off but most will eventually find themselves coming back to and listening to over and over. It's the "Animal" for a new era. The one thing you will read a lot on these reviews however is "where is all the other Def Leppard". Supposedly it's coming soon to itunes. I had a chance to talk with Vivian Campbell back in 2009 and asked him specifically about itunes and it's more a record company/publishing problem than one that that band has with itunes. I'm sure the band sees the value of having their music on itunes and available at the click of a mouse and for a band who relies on their greatest hits as much as this one does it's practically a no-brainer. The word is Def Leppard's catalog should be on itunes soon but hashing out the logistics may take time. For the time being though this fantastic collection should be enough to satiate the casual listeners while the faithful bask in it's glory. DO YOU WANNA GET ROCKED?!?!?
Welcome back!
Great music! I hope iTunes put the old records .
