iTunes Review

Continuing their relationship with Fugazi’s Guy Picciotto (producer), Misery Is a Butterfly emerges from the Blonde Redhead's newly spun chrysalis with fresh confidence and focus. Picciotto clearly understands the less-is-more aesthetic demanded by music that is understated and yet capable of evoking moods ranging from the darkly sinister to the disquietingly romantic. “Elephant Woman” is a gem, with violins, keyboards and clavinet entwined with Kazu Makino’s gauze-wrapped vocals to unsettling effect, while her hooky chorus on “Equus” feels oddly sticky, warm and sweet, like something once delicious decaying in the sun. Guitarist Amadeo Pace’s ragged vocals, squeaking out lines like “I am just a man, still learning how to fall” (on the vertiginous “Falling Man”) and hovering, ominous strings on songs like “Misery Is a Butterfly” and “Doll Is Mine” offer plentiful texture and color. “Maddening Cloud” is another key track, with rippling keyboards and a circling chorus pulling the listener in. Blonde Redhead might consider this the real start of their second career.

Phenomenal!

This album is one of the best albums I have ever listened to. Nearly every song is top quality and beautifully written and sung. 1. Elephant Woman - 5/5 Great song! Really catchy too. 2. Messenger - 4/5 Not as good as some of the others, but worth 99 cents. 3. Melody - 4.5/5 This is gorgeous, but it's not as good as some of the other ones! 4. Doll is Mine - 4.5/5 Kind of mellow, but still very good. 5. Misery is a Butterfly - 5/5 No wonder this is the title track - it completely blew me away. The lyrics are great too. 6. Falling Man - 6/5 The best song in the album! Left me absolutely speechless. His voice is perfect for the song, and once again the lyrics are just superb. 7. Anticipation - 3/5 This one is ok, usually I skip over this one when listening to this album 8. Maddening Cloud - 3.5/5 Good, but not great 9. Magic Mountain - 4.5/5 This song is actually really nice to listen to. 10. Pink Love - 5/5 For me, this song took a little getting used to, but now I love it! 11. Equus - 4.5/5 Catchy song. Recommended songs are: Elephant Woman, Misery is a Butterfly, Falling Man, Melody, Pink Love

Awesome album! Absolutely scrumptious!

I first heard of them in a commercial for a movie called "Me and You and Everyone We Know". Their song "Messenger" played as an instrumental towards the end of the commercial. After I heard the instrumental I dashed all over the internet to find the name of the song and the artist. After that I fell in love. I bought their albulm without knowing their other songs first. Now I have beautiful music to listen to when it's raining.

Misery Loves Company!!!

I was introduced to Blonde Redhead through the film Hard Candy. They play Elephant Woman at the end credits and from there on I fell in love. Why haven't I heard of these cats before? They're freaking awesome!!!

Biography

Formed: 1993 in NY

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Blonde Redhead's noisy, dissonant guitars, alternate tunings, and quiet, stilted lyrics have often been compared to early Sonic Youth. After randomly meeting at an Italian restaurant in New York, Japanese art students Kazu Makino and Maki Takahashi and Italian twin brothers Simone and Amedeo Pace formed the band in 1993. The name was taken from a song by the '80s no wave band DNA. With Makino and Amedeo on guitars and vocals, Simone on drums, and Takahashi on bass, the band's chaotic, artistic rock...
