iTunes Review
While some fans might find it ironic that Cross Canadian Ragweed’s most commercially palatable album to date begins with a scathing put-down of mainstream record bosses (“Record Exec”), Mission California is a wholly satisfying fusion of the band’s Texas grit and the listener-friendly hooks of contemporary pop country. The album’s two standouts are radio hits with real feeling: “Cry Lonely” is a yearning ballad on a 4/4 backbeat, and “I Believe You” an optimistic singalong that still manages a sneer. With “In Oklahoma” the band has finally written the perfect anthem for its home state, while “Smoke Another” is firebrand rock’n’roll for the honky tonks. Even as the band opens its heart on “Soul Agent” and “Jenny,” they still make space for the ornery blues of “Deal” and “Dead Man,” the latter written by frontman Cody Canada as a kiss-off to his estranged sister. Whether you are looking for modern country with a little more attitude, or just longing for the Steve Earle of Guitar Town, Mission California is a rewarding listen.
Customer Reviews
Watering Down the Whiskey....
I'm a fan of CCR and this latest is really leaning to the mainstream as many of you other reviewers suggest. Is it better? Depends on your taste but I prefer the loud taboo outlaw style that Nashville shuns. Is CCR trying to crossover and be more apealling to the radio listening masses? If they are going that route to make more money and get famous and if that is what they want more power to them. Just please don't go too Kenny Chesney on us.
The Best Damn Real Rock n Roll Band Out There!
When you think they can't do any more, they can't rock any harder or give it all to their fans.... CCR does it again. A band that loves their fans, performs 4 hour shows, 200+ days a year and consistantly produces new music and great new CD's... but yet doesn't have any inclination of selling out to Nashville...now that's Rock n Roll. "Lawrence" is a beautiful duet with old friend Lee Ann Womack. Touching, heartfelt and deep lyrical content. Their cover of Chris Knight's "Cry Lonely" is simply one of those songs you have to crank up and blast on a dark dessert highway. The re-released song "Jenny" is one of those American ballads that tells the story of love, loss and self redemption. "Smoke Another" and "Walls to Climb" is pure pedal to the metal 0 - 60 all out rock n roll. "Record Exec" is CCR's middle finger anthemn to all record exec's out there that have perverted the music industry. Buy this cd. You will love it. Then go out and get the rest of their catalog and spread the word that rock n roll hasn't died. Their are still genuine bands out there that still bleed rock n roll.
Get over it
If you don't want change then listen to non-artists. Buy the latest I'm on a beach in the Caribbean from Kenny Chesney. Every album is different and that's a good thing in my opinion. When the Purple album came out I thought they'd never top it, then Soul Gravy came along followed by Garage. Each one was different and I love them all. The day they came out though I thought the last one was better but then with time they all stand on their own and that's a sign of a great band. These guys are the best band around right now and deserve their fans support. Finally if they “sold out” they’d get played on radio and since they can’t crack the top 10 of radio I don’t think they’ve sold out and that’s just fine with me.
