Album Review

Jimmy Greene has stood out from the vast majority of emerging tenor saxophonists of his generation because he has sought to develop his own sound along with composing compelling music. This session with pianist Xavier Davis, guitarist Lage Lund, bassist Reuben Rogers, and drummer Eric Harland (like the leader, rising players of his generation who are much in-demand), features nine of his potent compositions. His big tone dominates "Mission Statement," the stimulating post-bop opener. The lush "In Nelba's Love" is a warm, spacious ballad built off a repeated riff. The wild "Mr. Octopus" likely got its title from reaching in several musical directions at once, though the musicians devour Greene's demanding work whole, especially during Davis' expressive solo, while the saxophonist wraps it with a surprising twist. Vibraphonist Stefon Harris is added for the exuberant "Revelation," showcasing Greene's expressive chops on soprano sax, while Greene also plays soprano on a turbocharged setting of sacred music composer Harry Smith's "Give Thanks."

Buy the album and support one of the finest sax players around.. his lineup is is also absolutely amazing.

Great and Honest..

Not only is Jimmy Greene an amazing Saxophonist, but he is extremely honest in his musical statements and stories. Here is Mr. Greene at his best. Highly recommend this one!

In Need Of Wider Recognition

I'll agree with the other reviewers in saying that this is Greene's best work thus far. You get nine original compositions by Greene in this set which go from the high spirited opener & title track "Mission Statement" to the subdued beauty of "Anna Grace". Greene has a huge clarion tone on tenor that is bright but with a dark sheen similar to Branford Marsalis's tenor sound, he also plays soprano sax very well without any of the tone or intonation quirks that are often commonplace with soprano players. The supporting cast on Mission Statement are some of the most in demand sidemen on the NYC jazz scene Rueben Rogers on acoustic bass has previously recorded with Greene on his last two albums & is totally on the same wavelength as Greene & one of my favorite drummers Eric Harland who plays with the intensity of a freight train but is no thrasher, in my opinion Harland is reinventing the things jazz drummers do with each recorded performance, here is no exception. On guitar is rising star Lage Lund who gave his career a tremendous boost when he won the Monk Competition for guitar, he has a Bill Evans like command of harmony & beautiful interesting chord voicings with a tone similar to Pat Metheny. On piano Xavier Davis has been working with Greene for several years & is in tune with Greene's complex tunes performing on acoustic piano & bringing out the Fender Rhodes for the track "Ana Grace". He plays beautifully throughout. Vibes master Stefon Harris guests on one tune Revelation to great effect. This is great jazz music check it out.
