iTunes Review
Matt Costa’s third release, and second on Jack Johnson’s Brushfire label, is a hummable swirl of sunny ‘60’s-era California pop and classic British Invasion influences. Starting from this familiar and comfortable place he crafts 13 catchy songs and surrounds them with the warm sound of echo chambers, reverb, and vintage amps. This approach works especially well on the standout singles “The Season,” “Johnny’s Love of Majik,” and “Witchcraft.” Some songs feature elaborate arrangements and soulful keyboard work (“Can You Tell Me,” “Idol,” “Bleeding Hearts”), while others are simpler and more direct, such as the piano-driven “Drive,” the title-track, and “Painted Face,” which revolve around straight-ahead acoustic guitar figures. Costa’s pleasant voice can express melancholy or playfulness with equal ease, and he keeps things varied and interesting by mixing up tempos and moods. Mobile Chateau’s depth, maturity, and overall sound makes this his most satisfying release yet.

Bummer
I've been a huge Matt Costa junkie since I heard "Cold December". But I gotta say, I was really bummed out after listening through the new album. The title track "Mobile Chateau" is excellent. Definitely worth the $0.99; it sounds like something that could've come off of the Monsters of Folk album. Other than that I was just waiting for the album to get better, but it just coasted off into a psychedelic confusion of overproduced music. Props to Matt Costa for tryin out a sound that's relatively untouched these days. If you're a huge Costa fan like me, you'll listen to Mobile Chateau over and over again regardless. If you're tryin Costa out for the first time, go buy "Songs We Sing" or "Unfamiliar Faces". You'll be glad you did.
Love it!!
Matt Costa does a great job in my opinion at creating a different sound but mainting the same chil feel. This album tends to sound more like surf rock than folk, but his voice i think is better incorperated in this new album. Thank you Matt :):)
I want my money back
I LOVED Unfamiliar Faces and Songs We Sing. So I made the decision to buy this whole album "on faith" and out of a sense of loyalty. HUGE MISTAKE. This can hardly even be called music. .the first 3 or 4 songs are so atonal and lack any sense of musicality. Even "Witchcraft" which is a great song, is RUINED by this ridiculous, phony retro-over-production nonsense. I should have known better since the "Pheasant Sessions" songs that have been released suffered from the same bad idea. I had to skip most of the songs before they finished because they were so awful. Beware, Matt Costa fans!
