If any two vocalists needed each other it’s Gary Louris and Mark Olson. Together, they create timeless harmonies that invigorate the alt-country-rock genre. After touring together for several years, they’ve finally put the band back together and done what fans have been dreaming of since the mid-‘90s. With their roots in Chris Hillman-based Byrds music, they deliver the goods on the chiming “She Walks In So Many Ways.” “High Water Blues” adds extra horsepower, while “Black-eyed Susan,” with its lovely violin saws, is an epic ballad. “Hide Your Colors” and “Closer to Your Side” create an organic approach to their Hollywood Town Hall days. “Stand Out In the Rain” lurches like vintage Neil Young and “Tiny Arrows” evokes memories of Young’s magnificent On the Beach. “Pouring Rain At Dawn” hits a perfect crawling-through-the-desert effect. The Deluxe Edition is loaded with goodies. Extra album tracks such as “Touch the Stars” and “Darkest Hour” plus an in-depth video documentary about the history and creative center of the band as well as several filmed rehearsal sessions and a soundcheck make it the essential package.

Love the Jayhawks!

Gary Louris is one of my favorite all time singers and the Jayhawks, with and without Mark Olson, are one of my favorite bands. This effort does not disappoint. Hope the Jayhawks continue to release new tunes for many years to come!

Like an old friend returning home ...

It's always wonderful to have a new Jayhawks album - they're unfortunately few and far beween over the past 18 years. This new one ("Mockingbird Time") is a very strong record and one that sounds better and better the more I've played it. The songs have great depth both musically and lyrically and it's oh so wonderful to hear Mark and Gary sing together again. Does this album reach the heights on their strongest albums (which I believe are "Tomorrow The Green Grass", "Rainy Day Music", and "Sound of Lies")? Not quite but I would put "Mockingbird Time" right up there with "Hollywood Town Hall" and "Smile" and I suspect that this "grower" of an album will gain steam over the months and years. Standout tracks are "Closer to Your Side", "Mockingbird Time", "Pouring Rain at Dawn", and "Stand Out in The Rain". Also, be sure to pick up the version of the album that includes "Touch The Stars" which is one of the best Jayhawks songs I've ever heard. For the next album, I'd love to see Gary Louris write more of the songs (as I've always considered him to be the best songwriter in the band and most of the songs on this album seem to me to be Mark Olson compositions) and I'd love to see more songs written by other band members especially the ultra-talented drummer Tim O'Reagan who wrote their amazing song "Tampa To Tulsa". Overall, "Mockingbird Time" is a very strong album with great songs, great production, and true emotional depth. It's so wonderful to have the Jayhawks back!!!

Disappointing

I've followed the 'Hawks for many years and have seen them dozens of times live. Though their early albums, Blue Earth (please check out "Ain't No End"), Hollywood Town Hall, and Tomorrow the Green Grass were some very good productions, this band actually got better when Mark Olson left and moved to L.A. Gary became a confident frontman, Tim got to express himself (loved "Tampa to Tulsa"). When Mark returned it was clear that Gary was going to subordinate himself to Mark's will and the band would sink back into mediocrity, and it did. So sad...
