Not too sure

I do not like this album. It just did not seem to blend. Granted that's an opinion after only one listen, I hope I change my mind because I absolutely love Rainy Day Music and Tomorrow the Green Grass.

I love this band enough to say it...

...and the truth is this; the Jayhawks, one of the finest bands ever, could not have happened without Mark Olson. He was seminal, instrumental, and absolutely vital to the band's genesis and early growth. His leaving was awful, as all things of that nature are at first, yet I think everything happens for a reason. Gary Louris grew as a songwriter, a bandleader, and a producer, and the Jayhawks' sonic palette and particular style along with him.
I know many will disagree in the name of traditionalism, but I think Smile and Rainy Day Music are two of the best albums by anyone ever- they are crowing achievements of songwriting, singing, and record-making. Louris had a vision undiluted by loyalty to history, politics, or friendship. All noble pursuits, but good albums these alone do not make. Therefore, I offer that this album is a wonderful testament to hatchet-burying and time-healed wounds, but I think the Jayhawks of the last two albums were grown up and away from those of the first two classic albums; arguably not better but most certainly different... and i just do not think this album is anywhere near the same quality as any of the aforementioned works. There are exceptions: 'She Walks...' and 'Tiny Arrows' are both masterpieces, but man, I'll eat my words if Louris is not the main songwriter of those two. I know folks are going to flip, and I mean no disrespect, but I'm listening and listening... and this is just the hard truth.

A previous review was dead on when he said this sounds like what would have followed TTGG had Mark Olson never left. There were some solid post Olson efforts but nothing beats Olson and Louris together. Another great album by a great band.
