Signs Of Life

By 1985, the future of Pink Floyd came into question when Roger Waters quit the band, and subsequently began what can only be described as a legal blitzkrieg to make sure that it was he, and not Gilmour, that was seen as THE member of Pink Floyd. This is Gilmour and Mason's response. While I must say I am a bigger fan of The Final Cut, A Momentary Lapse Of Reason makes it abudantly clear who was the better musician in the band. Where The Final Cut's guitar solos and instrumental passages were second to the inspired narrative, here Gilmour and co. make sure that each song is drenched in waves of sound, and even the knowledge that the only member of the band fully involved with this release was Gilmour (Mason and Wright only appear on a few songs) can't spoil the searing guitars on "Sorrow", the absolutely killer "Learning To Fly" and the poignant "On The Turning Away". Even when the Floyd go into full-on 80's mode, utilizing drum machines and MASSIVE reverb effects on "One Slip" and "A New Machine", the brilliance of the songwriting can't be denied. Only "The Dogs Of War", with it's blatant attempt to copy Waters' lyrical themes, falls short of the mark.

While not everyone may want such a heavy dose of 80's with their Floyd, A Momentary Lapse Of Reason is a great album, and necessary for all Floyd fans if only for the fact that it proves Waters (who had dominated the band totally since Wish You Were Here) was not the sole genius in the Floyd lineup.

Underrated at the time but now...

...it's apparent that this album had more magical moments than "The Final Cut". "Learning To Fly", "On The Turning Away", "One Slip" and "Sorrow" are great songs, and Gilmour's solo on "Yet Another Movie" is one of his best. The reunifictation of Gilmour/Mason/Wright would be solidified on the classic "Division Bell", but "Momentary Lapse" is not without it's charms.

THE MAGIC WAS STILL THERE

if songs like given to fly and on the turning away don't inspire you or give you goosebumps then i just don't know what is wrong with you . gilmour is such a tasteful and detailed guitar player . great record and one of the few in the wasteland that was the 80's .

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s

Pink Floyd is the premier space rock band. Since the mid-'60s, their music relentlessly tinkered with electronics and all manner of special effects to push pop formats to their outer limits. At the same time they wrestled with lyrical themes and concepts of such massive scale that their music has taken on almost classical, operatic quality in both sound and words. Despite their astral image, the group was brought down to earth in the '80s by decidedly mundane power struggles over leadership and,...
