iTunes Review

Leader Dave Wyndorf's love and knowledge of heavy rock 'n' roll has always ensured that Monster Magnet is a superior ensemble, regardless of who's actually in the band with him. Lineup changes are frequent (here there's a new rhythm section), but the group's sound is consistently powerful. The cover of Ken Baker's "There's No Way Out of Here" is an example of Wyndorf's unerring ear for a classic Monster Magnet move. Its stoner/space-rock vibe is perfectly in keeping with his own anthems. "S**t Machine," "Supercruel," and "Radiation Day" feature lyrics that mock, tease, and crack wise on a variety of topics. A cover of Robert Calvert's "The Right Stuff" is pure catharsis, spotlighting the guitar pyrotechnics of longtime axeman Ed Mundell. "CNN War Theme" plays like patriotism run amok. "On the Verge" toys with the apocalypse. "Monolithic" grinds out like a garage truck stuck in the mud until it breaks into a catchy sing-along chorus. "Ultimate Everything" spreads out over seven-plus minutes for a final takedown worthy of the band's esteemed reputation.

My Personal Favorite MM Album!!!!

I've been into this band from early on and can tell you w/o a doubt, THIS IS MY FAVORITE ALBUM BY THIS INCREDIBLE BAND!!! It just screams what rock and roll used to be about, Loud, Hard, Heavy music that's just fun and takes you somewhere else for a while to help you forget about all of life's insanities. Try not to listen to it while driving a car because most likely you'll get a ticket w/ all the adrenaline that'll be flowing through while listening to it. See them live if you have a chance because Wyndorff is one of the last TRUE rock stars that truly knows how to put on a show.

What was I thinking?

This album has been out for two years...and I finally have listened to it. I heard it was "crap". That couldn't be further from the truth. Once more a Hawkwind cover song ("The Right Stuff") lured me to listen to Monster Magnet and I'm once more blown away by the pure ooomph the music kicks out. My foot was peddling the bass drum for the first five tracks before I finally had a cramp and had to stop! If you liked the Superjudge era, you'll enjoy this. If you liked the Powertrip era, you'll enjoy this. It's great to hear Dave's genius is still intact lyrically and musically. Enjoy the trip.

Awesome!

One of the best heavy alternative rock albums of the last decade. Every song is outstanding. Great lyrics, crunchy riffs, and the songs don't all sound the same. The first four tracks are particularly outstanding, as are "Monolithic" and "There's No Way Out of Here". But there really isn't a bad track in the bunch. You can listen to this album all the way through. Tastefully offensive lyrics - because they're true!

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Retro-rock visionaries Monster Magnet spent much of the 1990s struggling against the prejudices imposed upon image and sound by alternative rock fashion nazis. In fact, it wasn't until that movement's late-'90s decline that the band's dogged persistence finally paid off, when their fourth album, Powertrip, catapulted to gold sales status on the strength of its massive hard rock hit, "Space Lord." In the meantime, Monster Magnet had managed to become one of the most successful and influential bands...
