Kudos to McCreesh...Boos to idiot reviewers who dont know *#^$
Conductor McCreesh is well known for his attempt at recordings accurate to what the composer would have wanted. Montiverdi documented well what we wanted in the Vespers of 1601. I find this recording to be well done, period-sensitive...Pleasant! If you are a McCreesh fan and also a fan of Messiah, you should hear the Gabrieli Consort/McCreesh recording of Messiah...It is stunning!
Great piece -- not great download process
The Monteverdi music is peerless, full of endless variety and energy -- but Itunes downloading leads a lot to be desired. It mixed the 2 cds and downloaded the pieces out of order. Also no text. So consider the CD version if you find an economical alternative.
A Rare Gem
it is said that there are three ways to play Monteverdi's Vespers of the year 1610. The first way is to play them in accordance with Monteverdi's life, in a way, by playing them very churchlike. Another way to do it is by playing very magnicently and gloriously and grandiosely, if that isn't redundant. The last way of playing them is by associating them with what they were designed to be played in: a church service. This is the way McCreesh goes about it, and, in my opinion, it is the best way. And, of course, the period instruments are a nice touch.
