With Miss May I’s sophomore studio album, the Troy, Ohio quintet bestow more progressive guitar leads and continue to unleash a raw, underground metalcore sound unspoiled by the commercial success of their debut LP Apologies Are for the Weak. Lead singer Levi Benton screams, growls and howls with demonic guttural bursts that make Dethklok’s Nathan Explosion sound like Katy Perry, especially on the opening cut “Our Kings” which comes tearing out of the speakers on a maelstrom of dueling guitar leads as bass player Ryan Neff’s humble crooning rubs against the grain of Benton’s throat-shredding wails. “Masses of a Dying Breed” opens with otherworldly ambiance before ascending guitarmonies blast off over propulsive double-kick drums firing off like automatic artillery. This number is a prime example of the band’s well-crafted breakdowns into more melodic topographies. Melody aside, the harder stuff can be found on the brutal onslaught of “Answers,” the ear-drum pummeling “Creations” and weighty bonus track “Rust” which features Bleeding Through’s Brandan Schieppati.

Hey kids!
First of all, stop being immature. If MMI changed their sound, they'd probably be less original (not to mention you'd be hating on them for the change). They were looking to expand their fan base, plus improve on their technical ability. Also, as many of you probably don't know, all the drums on this album were done live...so go toss out 95% of your Sumerian Record label collection (and any other 'core' based label) if you think they have no ability. These guys are all young (none over 25), and are already at the top of their genre. Sorry if you consider this a let-down.
True Men
Poppy synth lines? Cheesy auto-tuned clean vocals? I think not. Monument is 11 tracks of hard hitting, in your face metal. Highly recommended for fans of As I Lay Dying and other metal bands that follow that classic heavy metal style of dueling guitar riffs and raw, thrashy sounds. Levi Benton has secured himself as one of the best screaming vocalists of this era of metal with his high screams that could shatter glass and low growls that give off the perception of being possesed by the devil. Jerod Boyd's drum beats and insane kick pedal capabilities continue to impress even the most avid of listeners, and BJ and Justin's guitar's remain catchy, yet punishing. However, the most impressive piece of this album is the clean vocals of Ryan Neff, who had not been apart of the recording process of the band's debut album. Neff's vocal range is impressive and adds a brand new aspect to an already extremely talented band. In a scene that has turned into a 15 year old girl's fantasy, with keyboard breakdowns and robotic vocals, Miss May I serves as a breathe of fresh air for true fans of metal.
