Album Review

Despite the virtual process that Tanya Morgan used to produce this album (recording from remote locations and not in the studio together), Moonlighting still makes for a refreshing piece of work in today's hip-hop climate that seems almost totally bereft of what once sustained the art form: groups. Whether it was duos (Gang Starr, Eric B. & Rakim, OutKast), trios (A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul) or Wu-Tang Clan; hip-hop has always thrived off the convergence and mélange of talent and ideas as much as the transcendent singular talents of its solo artists. Moonlighting, released in the spring of 2006, features Brooklyn's Von Pea teaming with Cincinnati MCs Donwil and Ilyas. The trio spits witty, self-deprecating, yet boastful, well-crafted rhymes throughout this 13-song effort produced by Cincinnati beatmaker Brickbeat. As solo artists, the group members (save Von Pea) would seem to be lacking. As a group, the intermingling of their personalities (Von Pea and his BK swagger, Ilyas as the MC's MC, and Donwil as a bit of an old soul) and their distinct rhyme styles keep the album closer to unpredictable than boring. Moonlighting gives hip-hop heads that ol' familiar feeling — in a good way.

Good music is still here...

This CD is way better than I expected!! I read the promo on Okayplayer and I thought that maybe I'd hear some cats who were trying too hard to be different. NOT THE CASE AT ALL!! This is definitely worth the money, I'd buy the CD in store if I could find it, but I gotta cop it from itunes without the CD info, but it's all good:)... "Want U to Want Me" is just hott!! That Marvin sample is real smooth... I hope you cats get some love on your musical efforts. keep grindin...

One of the best and most surprising hip-hop albums of 2006.

If you are a fan of Native Tongue era hip-hop, please begin downloading this album. The best part about TM, however, is that they are not trapped by the old school, but rather have a fun time reinventing it. Once I heard "Ode to Tanya" I knew that these guys did not take themselves too seriously, but instead perfected the playful rhyming (see all of the early De La skits) and intelligent lyrics that keep their music fresh with each listen. Proof of that is the 20-something plays that "The Warm Up" has on my iTunes.

A breath of fresh air

Hearing this album reminds me of the first time I heard De La Soul ...Is Dead. it has the same forumla as the album - hilarious skits, inside jokes & quotables for days and then just good ole dope beats & lyrics. Can't wait to hear the next project from TM or Von Pea & Ilwil's solo/group albums. Highlights: Want U To Want Me Pretty Paper Thin Ode To Tanya We Right Here

Biography

Formed: 2003

Genre: Hip-Hop/Rap

Years Active: '00s

Though the name Tanya Morgan sounds as if it belongs to a solo female performer, it is in fact an all-male hip-hop group. The band started in 2003 when producer/MC Von Pea (who lived in Brooklyn) and MC Donwil (who lived in Cincinnati) met online and decided to make an album together. Bringing in Ilyas (who, with Donwil, made up the group Ilwil) and Cincinnati producer Brickbeat, Tanya Morgan began to send demos back and forth electronically,...
