iTunes Review

Deer Tick, a.k.a. John McCauley, plays alt-country that sounds so classic you really have to remove the “alt” if you’re going to classify him. Then again, since a lot of modern country sounds like adult contemporary with a slide guitar mixed on top, you really can’t call him “country.” More Fuel for the Fire opens with “La la La” a Flying Burrito Brothers-styled number that boasts upfront pedal steel, endearingly warbly harmonies, saloon piano, stellar Telecaster picking and drumming that could fall apart at any moment. “Dance of Love” choogles with a Johnny Cash-esque locomotive rhythm and dexterous guitar leads going head-to-head with harmonica blasts. The danceable “Axe Is Forever” rolls on a boogie-woogie shuffle and McCauley’s faraway vocals singing like he was recorded in a big room. But it’s his guitar work here that stands out — the punchy tone sounds like one of those little Fender tube amps from the ‘50s that come to life in a recording studio. “Straight Into a Storm” made it to Deer Tick’s 2009 album Born On Flag Day, but here we get the live version that plays as if Wreckless Eric was born in Texas.

I have a mild obsession with this band

. . . and they can do no wrong.

This is something I rarely say about a band, but how could you not love these guys?? I've seen them live twice now, once at Austin City Limits, and before that in a little club in Denton, TX. And as previous reviews have said, they give one of the most enjoyable and intimate live shows out there.

its a great and fun little EP, and just enough to keep you waiting for their new full length album. Different than alot of their older stuff, but you can tell the whole band really had a big part in the song writing, instead of just John as in previous albums.

long live Deer Tick!!

John McCauley, the songwriter behind the Deer Tick moniker, grew up in Providence, Rhode Island, where he began his career by teaching himself to play drums, guitar, piano, and pedal steel. McCauley started recording his own compositions and touring the area while still in high school, and he widened his circle after graduation by touring the entire country. Although he'd often perform solo, the young musician also began piecing together a proper band, occasionally playing as a duo with drummer Dennis...
