Album Review

Garaj Mahal's sixth CD has them continuing to explore contemporary jazz fusion with an Eastern undercurrent, a funky base, and fluid dynamics. Electric guitarist Fareed Haque loves his double-neck electric guitar, and the peerless electric bass guitarist Kai Eckhardt asserts his high-level talent in the manner he did while accompanying John McLaughlin many years prior. With Sean "The Rick" Rickman on drums and keyboardist Eric Levy, Garaj Mahal take many liberties into a dancing-in-your-head type of music with occasional forays into pop tunes. A track like "Witch Doctor" might lead one to a signature sound according to the band's name, a snake charmer's jazz to Indo-funk. Then there's the heavy metal jam of "The Long Form" and the bass-driven "Chester the Pester" in 6/8 time, or the tick-tock funk of "Tachyonics" with light Canterbury-style, airy melodies. In quieter pop singer/songwriter or even folkish tones, and even a piano ballad contributed by Levy, the quartet weaves through various strains of clearly identifiable commercial music while retaining its trailblazing spirit, making for a total listening experience appropriate for many different moods. ~ Michael G. Brilliant!

“More Mr. Nice Guy”, released by Owl Studios, is Garaj Mahal’s first recording with Sean Rickman, and, in conjunction with “Discovery” - a companion piece which showcases Fareed Haque’s skill and imagination with a Moog guitar – brilliantly displays their musical jambalaya. This is the first time I’ve had the opportunity to hear Garaj Mahal, and if these CDs are any indication, I need to go back and check out some of their earlier material. These CDs are that good!

The nine songs on “More Mr. Nice Guy” are an eclectic batch of groovy, funkified gems sure to please anyone with an adventurous ear. The CD starts off with ‘Witch Doctor” a funky, middle-eastern via India sounding tune topped off with some vocal inflections by The Rick and nice soloing by Haque and Levy. “Tachyonics” is a high-energy fusion romp which showcases the band’s virtuosity, and is followed by “The Long Form”, a ten-minute tour de force highlighted by some tasty drum work and amazing soloing by Eric Levy over a repeating musical motif. “Frankly Frankie Ford” has a laid back vibe, while “Chester The Pester” starts with some odd-time funky bass licks and is topped off with incredible solos by Eckhardt, Haque and Levy. “Alison’s Pony” ends this fabulous disc in a beautiful, laid back manner with some tasteful solos by Eckhardt, Haque and Levy.
