iTunes Review

With this acoustic six-song EP, Green River Ordinance harks back to their Texas origins. "Dancing Shoes" opens softly with folky strumming and picking that make way for rootsy gear like harmonica, banjo, mandolin and warm tones from an old Hammond organ. Frontman Josh Jenkins should be commended for singing of pastoral subjects like country roads without affecting a Southern drawl. He inflects in a lower register on the start of "Uncertainly Certain" over spare piano notes as percussion and cellos slowly seep into a ballad that sounds heartfelt without being over maudlin. "Undertow" and "Inward Tide" are also semi-sappy serenades that will hit home with anyone who ever got into Goo Goo Dolls' big hit "Iris" from the soundtrack to 1998's City of Angels and though "Out of the Storm" moves at the same slow rainy-day pace, it's more of a confessional trimmed with threadbare piano, organ drones, and tambourine as Jenkins croons about learning from humility in the face of heartbreak. "Where the West Wind Blows" bookends the EP with an uptempo rhythm and more countrified instruments.

A new chapter...

Affable rockers GRO, coming off a split with Virgin/Capitol, return to their Texas roots with this easy-to-love EP. Traditional instrumentation (mandolin, harmonica, fiddle, banjo, piano) lends a back-to-basics vibe to this album, led by the earnest vocals of Josh Jenkins and some fine harmonizing by his bandmates. "Dancing Shoes" is an instant classic in the country/folk vein, "Where the West Wind Blows" is foot-tapping bluegrass, and "Inward Tide" and "Undertow" are sweeping songs that could easily translate to an electric rock version if desired. All in all, a smile-inducing record that leaves me eager for the next iteration of this band's post-label journey.

What a gem!

Sometimes it takes a few listens to fall in love with a certain album, but with it's first play through I'm already loving GRO's new EP. A little different from their Out of My Hands album, but just as good. The songs have a different sound, where the electric guitars are replaced with acoustic ones, as well as touches as things like violins. It's just gorgeous. Current favorites are Where the West Wind Blows and Dancing Shoes, but really, they are all good. Totally worth it!

GRO Unplugged Still Electric

Green River Ordinance is a fantastic pop rock band, but it's great to see this different side of them as well. I love how they highlight their Texas roots in these songs. "Dancing Shoes" and "Out of the Storm" are the real standouts here, though each track holds its own. I picked up this EP a couple of weeks ago at their show, and I find myself playing it over and over. I can hardly wait to see what GRO will accomplish on their next album, now that they've split with Capitol Records and they’re “on their own.”
