iTunes Review

Steely Dan’s Donald Fagen’s third solo album (coming 13 years after 1993’s Kamakiriad) is, according to the man, the completion of his personal trilogy. The future he once envisioned has come to the present day and things are worse for the wear. His dark humor is still in evidence. “Brite Nitegown” was inspired by the misanthropic comedian W.C. Fields, who referred to death as “the fellow in the bright nightgown,” and whom Fagen devises many different ways to make his acquaintance. He converses with the ghost of Ray Charles in “What I Do,” while trying to get it on with “Security Joan,” who waves her metal-detecting wand at him in the airport and then delays his flight for the night. Fagen and his wife, meanwhile, construct “The Great Pagoda of Funn” to shut out the outside world and the destruction encroaching around them. All these hi-jinks are delivered in the by-now standard tight groove, jazz-rock and bright sonic studio polish that have made Fagen an audiophile’s dream.

I can't believe I slept on this album

Well, its now 2009 and I'm just now puchasing this album. I saw the vinyl edition in Tower Records when it first came out, but it was kind of pricey and I forgot about it. Three years later, here I am on itunes and blown away by this album. I loved Steely Dan growing up and AJA and "Nightfly" were my favorite projects of Fagan. I was pleased to see he went back to that formula of haunting harmonies and eclectic music. I have always loved from him and no one does it better. If you are a Donald Fagan or Steely Dan fan, this is a must have!!!

Mr. Fagen has written some devilishly catchy tunes over the years but "What I Do" is up there with the best of them. The song will stay in your head for days...

Donald Fagen was one of the two masterminds behind Steely Dan, the seminal jazz-pop band of the '70s. Fagen's solo work has been a continuation of the band's work of the early '80s — carefully constructed and arranged, intricately detailed pop songs that are more substantial than their stylish...
