Favorite CD this year

I've always had a lot of respect for Ricky Skaggs, especially for his flawless bluegrass CDs
so I have to admit that I had reservations about what I heard Ricky describe as a Beatlesque effort (not to mention the new flowing locks) but I decided to give it a try... I've listened to it straight through 3 times in a row now and was simply blown away by the music that he's made. Beautiful harmonies with more hooks than you might imagine.
Make no mistake this is a Christian CD which he very admirably makes no attempt to pass as anything else.
This really is my favorite CD this year. Past favorites have included Steve Earl's Washington Square Serenade and JJ Cale's Role On. Great job Ricky and God bless you for your talent an honesty (first review by the way.)

Good solid Ricky album 4 1/2

This is more in the vein of his early 80's music. No bluegrass here, sadly.
However, having said that, this is an amazing album.
Definitely more poppy, but with a decidedly sacred edge to it. The man can definitely write melodies and harmonies with the best of any writer secular or not.
It's kind of an unintentionally sneaky way of writing. He's got these fantastic hooks, great, almost Eagles like harmonies on top of many different musical styles (mid tempo rock, country/rock, soul, contemporary christian), and by the time you're hooked, you remember that he's singing about God.
For those us who don't like overtly religious songs, this won't matter, the songs carry over on melody alone.
For the rest of us, what better way to get your cake and eat it too?
Overall, a great work from an artist who is far more versatile than even I'd known.

Writers Performance

Watched an amazing performance by two of the principle contributing writers and percussionist for this album. And, it was awesome. Some of the best music/writing I've ever heard. The background stories match. Sit back and let it roll. God and the spirit of music are truly alive in this project. Gordon Kennedy and Ben Cooper... wow. Thank you, Ricky!!!

Genre: Country

Years Active: '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

By the time he was in his mid-thirties, Kentuckian Ricky Skaggs had already produced a career's worth of music. At age seven he appeared on TV with Flatt & Scruggs; at 15 he was a member of legendary Ralph Stanley's bluegrass band (with fellow teenager Keith Whitley). None of his '80s peers, male or female, had better musical credentials than Skaggs. The term "multi-talented" lacks the power to characterize this extraordinary singer and instrumentalist. Not only can he sing and pick with the...
