iTunes Review
This set doesn't cover all the Motown singles that hit Number One on various charts, but it does a fine job of capturing many of the company's most recognizable tracks - particularly from the classic '60s and '70s eras. Motown 1's is also a reminder of all the different styles that went into building "the Sound of Young America," a sound that isn't as monolithic as it's sometimes remembered. The bluesy wails of Marvin Gaye and the Temptations' David Ruffin sit alongside the cooing Diana Ross and the Supremes and the funky dance-floor stomp of Jr. Walker and the All-Stars. Later hits by Ross and Lionel Ritchie and Boyz II Men show that while Motown's cultural impact had been blunted by the '80s, there was no denying the label's ongoing ability to grab the zeitgeist's brass ring.

Repackaged retread.
A good introduction to Motown... a music a treasure... but including Boyz II Men in the same catagory as these icons tells you something about the so-so catch-all approach to this collection. If you own no Detroit soul, buy it. If you want to become a real fan, start investing in collections of each of these amazing artists. (also look for "Standing in the Shadow of Motown" for a fantastic, contemporary selection tunes that put talents of the Funk Brothers ... the back up band on many of these... on display!)
MICHAEL MCDONALD?!?
Though I'm not a big fan of compilations, this is full of some pretty great songs...and then the grand finale is...michael mcdonald?!? seriously?!? that's just wrong.
Greatest Music Ever!
First off, I am fourteen and I am in love with motown music! This is real music, with soul and meaning. All of these songs are fantastic! If you like this genre you definitely need to check out more Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross & The Supremes, The Temptations, etc. I highly recommend this to anyone. If you aren't sure whether or not it's worth it, I'm telling you, Motown music IS THE GREATEST GENRE OF MUSIC THAT TIS PLANET WILL EVER HAVE THE PLEASURE OF LISTENING TO!
