Guilty pleasure
I know the entire set of these sonatas are belittled, partially because of Glenn Gould's aversion to the composer, but mostly because of the style in which he plays them. My first Mozart sonata I played at 14 was a minor, my piano teacher made me tape of Gould playing it and told me to listen to it so I would know not how to play Mozart. However, Gould offers an interesting perspective and insight into Mozart's music language, giving a fresh outlook. This set is not for the casual listener, or for someone who does not know these sonatas well. This is for listening with the scores and studying, and then listening to a more traditional version with the scores (i.e. Uchida) and compare. Gould's execution of ornaments and clear cut way of playing make it sound as if these pieces are being played on a fortepiano more than the modern piano, they are vivacious and youthful. But for a pianist...a guilty pleasure.
The worst Mozart recording ever!!!
Do yourself a favor, avoid the the worst Mozart recording ever! Instead, listen to truly great Mozart performers such as Eschenbach, Uchida, Horowitz, Brendel, Gieseking...
If you want to hear someone play the piano fast...
get this album. If you want to hear someone play Mozart, get the Vladimir Horowitz album. You'll enjoy it more and save money too. Glenn Gould plays Mozart like a robot. Horowitz plays with soulful passion. His is a beautiful work of art. Gould's is unbearable.
