It starts with the song writing . . .
So what do you get when you start with a very clever set of lyrics, and a robustly structured music foundation, and you add an addictively metered set of guitar riffs, a calculated-flashy bass line, and a rock solid drum foundation? You get a starting point for a brilliant song like "Mr. Bureaucracy." Add to that a flavorful vocal performance that very might be Pete Mac's best work to date, and a precision-driven set of background vocals, a complex use of verses, bridge, and choruses, and a mix that harkens back to the conventions we first started hearing in Seattle in the early 90's, when grunge was first taking form, and you begin to see why this song resonates as it does.
It is a Paradox song to be sure, but it reminds us of the immense craftsmanship and discipline that made the hard-working bands like Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, and Nirvana so special. With reverence to be paid to the energetic punk scene of the 70s, and the heavy rock of the 80s for sure, it was the craftsmanship and discipline that made the short, but sweet grunge movement a very special part of rock history. And it is that very craftsmanship and discipline, with a fresh energy and creativity, that make this new offering by Paradox smoking-white-hot. Bring on the rest of the album, please!
