If you liked Always Got Tonight, you may like this...

I've been a huge Chris Isaak fan since his first album, Silvertone. After James Wilsey left Silvertone and the sound of Isaak's band changed, I missed the dreamy quality of those early albums, but I still loved Isaak's lyrics and that particular retro quality to his recordings -- both new and vintage at the same time (Forever Blue is amazing). Unfortunately, with Isaak's separation from longtime producer Erik Jacobsen, my interest in Isaak's music started to wan. Always Got Tonight was polished and studio-heavy, but it didn't have that special retro sound that elevated Isaak's previous work. Instead, Always Got Tonight was lush and modern-sounding, but decidedly uninspired. Now, 7 years later... after a tv show and much touring... comes Mr. Lucky. Mr. Lucky has many of the same issues that plagued Always Got Tonight. After a first listen it's hard to remember an specific song. They run together as well-made but uninspired porridge. There are many styles present; Isaak and company are trying to broaden their musical vocabulary, but nothing sticks. Instead, the album feels like Isaak and Silvertone are lost in a musical identity crisis. Has working with so many different artists through the years diluted Chris Isaak's unique style? Or are Isaak and crew making a stab for the musical mainstream now that they are older? At once I am unsure whether I'm listening to a Chris Isaak album or a Maverick's cd ("You Don't Cry Like I Do" sounds like many Raul Malo tracks). Also, I notice Isaak now all too often using lyric couplings which are identical to his earlier works. Add that to an unfortunately less powerfull version of Speak of the Devil's "Breaking Apart," and you have an album which will fade sooner than any fan would hope. Because I am a Chris Isaak devotee, I certainly had hoped that this would be a great cd. Is there nothing in Mr. Lucky to reccommend? No, there are some fun songs, brief hints of greatness ("Baby, Baby" & "Mr. Lonely Man"), and Isaak's amazing voice... but where Forever Blue, Chris Isaak, and San Francisco Days will always be in my cd and ipod rotation, Mr. Lucky will always be left out. My hope is that Chris will put out more work consistently... and maybe even (fingers crossed) work with Erik Jacobsen again. Whatever the case, Isaak has given us great work in the past, always has a great show, and I will always be in line to buy his albums.

A flat out, unbelievable album!

The seven year wait between studio albums for completely new music was well worth it. Top to bottom the songs play really well to his voice and his writing is unmatched. I pre-ordered the album from his website and received it early, and then pre-ordered on ITunes to get the extra bonus tracks. Unfortunately the tracks are available for individual purchase, but because the album is so good I don't mind paying for the extra copy! Download it and fully enjoy a great album from an artist who definitely deserves much more recognition than he gets. You won't be disappointed! Some of the strongest songs on the album are We Let Her Down, We've Got Tomorrow and Best I Ever Had. Another great song is his duet with Trisha Yearwood of Breaking Apart which he originally recorded on 1998's Speak of the Devil album. Can't say enough at the strength of the entire album. Another great set of new tunes from Isaak!

A MUST HAVE ALBUM

The collection of songs on "Mr. Lucky" is nothing short of AMAZING! I'm so in love with this guy!! In my opinion, "Mr. Lucky" has the best collection of songs ever written and performed by Chris with melodies and lyrics that carry you away to a different time and place and unlock beautiful, treasured memories. The mix of "upbeat, feel good" songs with "slow, hurting" ballads is perfectly balanced. Both new and long-time fans of Chris Isaak will not be disappointed. Chris has a talent for writing songs with lyrics that feel honest and true. His use of beautiful, sometimes moody, harmonies works so well in letting the listener know that he has lived what he sings. His songs about the pain and hurt of lost love ("Cheater's Town", "Breaking Apart", "She") are sung with such passionate emotion that you can just feel his torture. Makes me want to give him a hug and whisper, "It's going to be OK, Chris, it's going to be OK"! The "upbeat" songs ("We've Got Tomorrow", "Mr. Lonely Man", "Take My Heart") on this CD lift my spirits and make me smile. And, there's no doubt about it, Chris is having fun with these songs. CONTRARY to the opinions of a few other reviewers – **Mr. Lucky is NOT a collection of "recycled" songs. Because 2 of the 18 songs on this CD were previously released DOES NOT make this a recycled collection of songs. Rating this CD lower because of that would be the same as calling ALL "Greatest Hits" albums by ALL artists totally worthless and without merit. SAD!! **Additionally, Chris still sings with that dreamy, passionate and emotion-filled style that defines him. And yes, the lyrics in some of Chris' songs are simplistic. But they are also honest, truthful, and straightforward. When we put words to our feelings those words are not spoken in "complicated, poetic " language. Chris speaks the language of the heart -- he "tells it like it is". Very pure and refreshing! There are some things in this world that are right and perfect just the way they are. Chris Isaak's music is one great example. Thank you, Chris, for sharing your incredible talents with us.

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Songwriter Chris Isaak clearly loves the reverb-laden rockabilly and country of Sun Studios. In particular, he transfers the sweeping melancholy of Roy Orbison's classic Monument singles ("Crying," "Oh, Pretty Woman," "In Dreams") to the more stripped-down, rootsy sound of Sun, resulting in a stylized take on '50s and '60s rock &...
