Album Review

Mr. Lucky is the first album Chris Isaak has released in seven years but it's hard to call it a comeback: it's been so long since Isaak had something approaching a crossover hit that it's hard to say that he's been away, that he has something to come back from — he just appears every few years, such as in March of 2009, when Mr. Lucky appeared as part of a coordinated multimedia attack. In addition to this new album, Isaak has a new talk show on A&E — like Elvis Costello's Spectacle but on basic cable — and Mr. Lucky isn't strictly a soundtrack for the show, but it's fair to say that the show gives Mr. Lucky a larger potential audience than any Isaak album in a long time, probably since the last time he had a television show in the early-2000s sitcom The Chris Isaak Show. Given this bigger platform, it makes perfect sense that Mr. Lucky feels carefully considered: from its production to its construction, it's a deliberate attempt to modernize Isaak's retro obsessions without abandoning them. Usually, this modernization surfaces in echoey atmospherics partway between U2 and Coldplay, textures that suit his melodramatic Roy Orbison tributes. Mr. Lucky works because Isaak and crew don't overplay their hand — he's never swallowed in waves of digital delay, the way Roy himself was on his swan song, Mystery Girl — but tweak subtly, then alternate these coolly romantic mood pieces with swinging rockabilly, sly low-key grooves, duets with Trisha Yearwood and Michelle Branch, breezy pop that harks back to a time prior to the British Invasion, and a big, glitzy Vegas number to close the whole show. As a sensibility, it's no different than anything Isaak's done, so the difference is the execution, not just in the light, fresh touch of the production but the songs, which are his strongest in a long time — and that's good enough to please his longtime fans as well as anybody whose interest might be piqued by the new show.

Waited 7 years for this? Recycled music?

Sorry. I know my review will upset many Chris Isaak die-hard fans. And let's face it. If you're an Isaak fan chances are you are in fact also die-hard. I love this guy. Puts on some of the greatest shows I've ever seen. Hell of a nice guy in person. And for over 20 years he's given us some great music. This is not some of that great music, however. This is a lackluster attempt. After waiting 7 years we should get something better than this. I haven't been too big of a fan since Eric Jacobsen left as Isaak's producer. This album has some recycled songs: Breaking Apart, originally from "Speak of the Devil" and Best I ever Had, which was previously recorded and released as a B-side on a single. I miss the days of "Forever Blue" and "Heart Shaped World." But it's Chris Isaak. So I will continue to buy and listen to anything he puts out. And i-Tunes, $10.99 for a copy? Gimme a break. I bought a real CD for $9.99.

Another solid album, bound to be under-appreciated

I have never ever for the life of me figured out why Chris Isaak never had more commercial success, he has an amazing voice, catchy songs, and the commercial likability that should make him a huge star, yet somehow he has never really obtained the success absent a single or two that he deserves. He has actually grown since an artist and I hope this album will obtain at least the level of success Forever Blue was able to obtain.

A MUST HAVE - BUT GET THE BONUS TRACKS VERSION!

The collection of songs on "Mr. Lucky" is nothing short of AMAZING! I'm so in love with this guy!! In my opinion, "Mr. Lucky" has the best collection of songs ever written and performed by Chris with melodies and lyrics that carry you away to a different time and place and unlock beautiful, treasured memories. The mix of "upbeat, feel good" songs with "slow, hurting" ballads is perfectly balanced. Both new and long-time fans of Chris Isaak will not be disappointed. Chris has a talent for writing songs with lyrics that feel honest and true. His use of beautiful, sometimes moody, harmonies works so well in letting the listener know that he has lived what he sings. His songs about the pain and hurt of lost love ("Cheater's Town", "Breaking Apart", "She"- Bonus Track) are sung with such passionate emotion that you can just feel his torture. Makes me want to give him a hug and whisper, "It's going to be OK, Chris, it's going to be OK"! The "upbeat" songs ("We've Got Tomorrow", "Mr. Lonely Man", "Take My Heart") on this CD lift my spirits and make me smile. And, there's no doubt about it, Chris is having fun with these songs. CONTRARY to the opinions of a few other reviewers – **Mr. Lucky is NOT a collection of "recycled" songs. Because 2 of the 18 songs on this CD were previously released DOES NOT make this a recycled collection of songs. Rating this CD lower because of that would be the same as calling ALL "Greatest Hits" albums by ALL artists totally worthless and without merit. SAD!! **Additionally, Chris still sings with that dreamy, passionate and emotion-filled style that defines him. And yes, the lyrics in some of Chris' songs are simplistic. But they are also honest, truthful, and straightforward. When we put words to our feelings those words are not spoken in "complicated, poetic " language. Chris speaks the language of the heart -- he "tells it like it is". Very pure and refreshing! There are some things in this world that are right and perfect just the way they are. Chris Isaak's music is one great example. Thank you, Chris, for sharing your incredible talents with us.

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Songwriter Chris Isaak clearly loves the reverb-laden rockabilly and country of Sun Studios. In particular, he transfers the sweeping melancholy of Roy Orbison's classic Monument singles ("Crying," "Oh, Pretty Woman," "In Dreams") to the more stripped-down, rootsy sound of Sun, resulting in a stylized take on '50s and '60s rock &...
