Album Review
The score for the 2007 children's fantasy Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium teams composers Alexandre Desplat and Aaron Zigman, a yin-yang proposition that pairs the darker, more raucous sensibilities of the former and the lighter, more heart-tugging approach of the latter to fine effect. Although the liner notes fail to delineate which composer wrote what, it's fairly obvious that the more fantastical cues belong to Desplat and the more ethereal themes to Zigman, and given the limited stylistic and emotional palette of most contemporary film scores, the extremes of Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium make for a refreshing change of pace. That being said, however, the individual themes originate from such different perspectives that the score as a whole lacks cohesion — at nearly one hour in length, it's a sometimes frustrating listening experience, and much less than the sum of its myriad parts.
Customer Reviews
"You mean special." "No, MAGICAL."
:) Sorry for the cheesy line, but without the music i would not have liked this movie half as much. I really enjoyed the film itself, but Zigman's and Desplat's score was what made me fall in love with it. The most noteworthy track is probably "Finale" because it plays the reaccuring film theme as well as the music in the end, and it is purely beautiful. However, other tracks worth listening to are "Mahoney's Debut", "Night Time", and "The Flight of Magorium". Every track is good in the end, though, so an album purchase will leave you satisfied.
Not since "Somewhere in Time" has their been this kind of music
Once in a great while a soundtrack will come along that transcends the movie it supports. This is one of those times. If a movie soundtrack can transport you into the movie as you listen then the composer has done his job. Aaron Zigman has done just that. Not since "Somewhere in Time" has there been such a wonderful musical score. The Flight of Magorium and Dancing are two in particular. Don't let this one go by.
Well done
Not only is this an excellent movie it is also an amazing soundtrack. It is as light and magical as the movie itself, which is something that is hard to grasp in just instrumental pieces alone. The movie and the soundtrack expertly coordinate to make something phenominal, buy them both i'd say.
