iTunes Review

Hot on the heels of the Geto Boys’ breakthrough album We Can’t Be Stopped, Scarface came out with his solo debut, a ferocious LP that takes its place alongside Ice Cube’s Amerikkka’s Most Wanted and Death Certificate, hood-rap manifestoes of the highest order. Mr. Scarface Is Back retains the attitude and sonic architecture of the first two Geto Boys albums, but replaces that group’s sense of mischief with steel-eyed wisdom and a heavy dose of ghetto truth. Produced entirely by Rap-A-Lot’s in-house producer Crazy C, it is among the leanest, meanest and most unified of all hip-hop albums. Scarface adheres to funk samples and his hard-hitting rhymes reignite vintage grooves by James Brown, Melvin Bliss and the Meters. In a way, Scarface was making a cross-generational statement. Mr. Scarface Is Back gets its juice from the militant rhythms of '70s funk, aligning Face with the enraged purpose of his father’s generation. Scarface refuses to mitigate his portrayal of inner-city Houston in the crack era. Insanity, greed, vengeance — this is brutal drama, delivered with the force of a steel bat to the ribs.

Scarface quickly became the South's most admired rapper and remained so throughout the '90s after breaking away from the Geto Boys to launch his solo career in 1991. Even if he never scored any national hits or stormed up the charts with any of his numerous albums throughout the '90s, no one could question his clout throughout the South. He essentially defined what it meant to be a Southern thug rapper years before anyone even coined the term Dirty South. This became glaringly evident in the late...
