iTunes Review

The Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band asserts itself in odd and intriguing ways on its 2009 self-titled debut. Benjamin Verdoes (singer/guitarist) and his teenaged adopted brother Marshall Verdoes (drummer) form the throbbing heart of this self-consciously quirky Seattle quintet. The band draws from a rummage sale’s worth of influences — the twitchy rhythms of new wave acts like Gang of Four and Wire can be heard alongside ‘70s prog-rock bombast and Pixies-like pop effusions. Erratic tempo-shifts and volleys of lead guitar fire are reoccurring elements, sparking up tracks like “Who’s Asking,” “Dull Reason,” “Anchors Dropped,” and “Masquerade.” A few tunes — especially “Little Red Shoes” — lay down semi-danceable funk grooves. At the other extreme are slower, nerve-grinding pieces like “A Year or Two” and the interminable “On the Collar.” Tormented lyric themes are relieved by dollops of goofy humor and fractured imagery. Is this all weirdness for weirdness’ sake? It’s hard to tell at times. But the Mt. St. Helens Band shows enough wit and imagination to make the question worth exploring.

A wonderful album from spectacular people!

Another stunner from Seattle's music scene, I can't rave enough about the album. Perfectly poppy, with a high-energy about them. I currently have this album on repeat, gives a better buzz than a cup of coffee. I'm so excited to own it, you should also. p.s. (It's a bonus that they are an attractive band as well, look 'em up on google images!)

Wow. Wow. Wow.

This album is amazing and captures the tight yet frantic pop-beauty that they produce live. I saw them in Seattle a few weeks ago and they completely blew me away. Amazing quirky syncopated pop songs. Amazing stage presence. On the one hand manic, on the other beautiful. A highlight: the bass player bouncing tennis balls off a held up kick drum in a musical fashion (sending the balls flying into the crowd). Another highlight was standing next to the drummer's (Marshall who is 14) teacher from school who was slightly drunk and could not stop telling me that he was "f***ing amazed and had to come to the f***ing concert to believe this with his own f***ing eyes". It was quite hilarious and Marshall, I really hope your teacher reads this.

Outstanding!

Wow. This LP is by far the best of the new artists that have developed over the last few years. A mix of ska, punk, and classic rock! Don't miss this band if they perform live at a venue near you. Passionate vocals, great dueling guitars, and energy will get you moving to their fast pace beats. Don't miss out on this LP as they are going to hit it big soon!

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band first appeared in 2008, when the quintet generated an internet buzz with its lengthy band name and undisclosed backstory. Choosing to preserve that mystique, the Seattle residents released a series of humorous PSA videos on MySpace before issuing any recorded music. A demo song finally appeared that summer, and the band's history slowly began to unfold. Apparently, bandleader Benjamin Verdoes (guitar, vocals) had founded the band with his 12-year-old adopted brother, Marshall...
