iTunes Review

Although three of the four songs comprising 30 Seconds To Mars’ MTV Unplugged EP were taken from 2009’s This Is War, keep in mind that the Los Angeles trio offer awesome acoustic re-workings. Since the band’s controversial video for “Hurricane” was nominated at the 2011 Video Music Awards in three categories, it makes sense that they chose the song to introduce the performance. Jared Leto breaks the ice with some a cappella vocal gymnastics that lead into a lush string section opening the song. This version is wrought with more tension than the studio recording until the audience pipes in, singing along with the chorus — serving as a reminder that this is a live and intimate concert. “Kings and Queens” follows with more audience participation and some tastefully arranged strings accompanying Leto’s acoustic guitar. Inspired by growing up poor in Louisiana, “Night of the Hunter” plays with a more gripping urgency here. Giving into constant comparisons with Bono, Leto closes with a soulfully sung cover of “Where the Streets Have No Name” replete with a gospel choir.

Who said that Mars are burnt out?

Let me start off with saying that when I first watched the Mars MTV Unplugged special, my breath was taken away. But, at the same time, I was annoyed with all the audience interruptions and off-pitch sing-alongs.

Luckily, whoever mixed and mastered this EP did an incredible job. They minimized the audience's voices and took out all of the stray notes (okay so there are still a few mishaps). They also brought out Jared's voice and the beautiful accompaniment by the Vitamin String Quartet.

So, overall, I would have to say that any Mars fan would love this EP. One highlight would be "Night of the Hunter," in which the acoustic guitar brings the song to an entirely new level. Also, the ethereal violin in "Hurricane" makes it one of the best acoustic performances I have of that song. Sure, the audience sounds childish at times, but they are overshadowed by the pure stripped down sound of this event. And what makes this EP so special is the cover of U2's "Where The Streets Have No Name," which even non-Mars fans can appreciate and enjoy.

AMAZING!
