Album Review

Leave it to Kyuss — a sorely underappreciated band whose music was so ahead of its time that its huge influence became apparent only after its demise — to put out a best-of set that really isn't any such thing. In fact, Muchas Gracias: The Best of Kyuss is more of a collector's item, combining nine of the band's would-be hits (four of them in previously unreleased live versions) with no less than six album leftovers and B-sides. Predominantly instrumentals, few of these rarities actually approach the caliber of the band's incredible studio albums (the ultra-heavy "Shine," the frenetic "Flip the Phrase," and the epic "Sandpiper" come close) but Kyuss fanatics are bound to consider them a long-lost treasure nonetheless. For the first-time listener, however, Muchas Gracias paints an incomplete portrait that omits some of the cult heroes' best-known material, including the bludgeoning riffage of "Green Machine" and the space rock thrashing of "Odyssey." Neophytes are therefore advised to pick up either of the band's two best albums Blues for the Red Sun or Sky Valley instead.

Great title but an non "clean" version would be nice.

I have been looking to buy this album unedited and so far I have to import from Australia for 20 bucks it would be nice if you guys could release an unedited version for all of us who can't stand cut up songs with cuts, different words, beeps, or what ever they use to censor them... it just kills the mood. Would give this 5 stars but I give it 4 since its censored if you don't get one this is still a GREAT buy for half the price than getting it where ever else (28-30 bucks in Amazon.com) so if you truely don't mind "clean" versions get it, you won't regret anything by Kyuss

Ay! Why did they ever break up?

I found these guys in '97 and have loved the music ever since. In case you didn't already know, when Kyuss split up, they formed El Nino Brown on the one hand and Queens of the Stone Age on the other. If you can find Kyuss' "Queens of the Stone Age," an early album of theirs, snatch it up because it ROCKS. However, Blues for the Red Sun is a good, close 2nd and contains more songs as well. The dookey-funk style bass will have your hips moving, and the crashing guitar riffs and raw, laid-open vocals are SO SO better than Queens of the Stone Age. Buy this album if you love real, in-your-face rock. If you're looking for something more radio-friendly or for a "Rrrr rrr rrr' type of sound where you can't understand what the heck they're sayin', though, not for you.
