iTunes Review

Waters became a darling of the young white audience that would soon be the blues' most ardent supporters with this Newport Folk Festival concert. It's a high-energy performance with a crack band that includes harp master James Cotton, guitarist Pat Hare, and pianist Otis Spann. The reception they received was so warm that Waters, yielding to the crowd's cheering demands, played "Got My Mojo Working" twice, back-to-back, and let Spann close the set with an improvised "Goodbye Newport Blues," based on lyrics written on the spot by the poet Langston Hughes. But not before offering heated version of the classics "I'm Your Hoochie Koochie Man," "I Feel So Good," and "Baby, Please Don't Go", as well as performing Willie Dixon's then new "Tiger In Your Tank." This historic concert is also one of the earliest live blues albums outside the realm of field recordings.

A Milestone

This captures Muddy at the height of his power. From the Delta to the streets of Chicago to the uppercrust of Newport. The audience must not have known what hit them.

You haven't heard Muddy...

...til you've heard his live recordings. Because this was recorded at his prime, this LP stands out as the one Muddy Waters album I most recommend. Beautifully recorded...excellent set list...legendary venue...the perfect storm. Buy it.
