iTunes Review

Logging in over a decade of service and tending toward the more melodic end of the nü-metal genre, Mudvayne sound like old pros who’ve grown weary of heaviness for heaviness’ sake. It isn’t enough for the Illinois-based group to simply grind it out anymore. They need to engage themselves by exploring their progressive influences more thoroughly and it leads to infinitely more interesting material. “Beautiful and Strange” kicks things off with a twisting and turning that sounds like a band creeping through the basement towards the light. “1000 Mile Journey” sticks close to a catchy melody that’s near pop. “Scream With Me” is far more thoughtful and radio-ready than its title implies. “Closer” chugs with metal’s martial beat and its hoarse, fateful bark, but the guitar solos adhere closer to classic rock. “Heard It All Before,” “I Can’t Wait” and “Beyond the Pale” are the album’s purebred attack dogs, relentlessly charging towards the finish line with no need for finesse, while “Dead Inside” offers up a rare glimpse at the band’s acoustic side.

Amazing!

Although I LOVE all Mudvayne albums, the crew incorporates all previous outputs into this amazing Metal showcase. They have evolved so well and apparently do not appear to be slowing down anytime soon. For any true Mudvayne fan, this album is a must. They can still rock out with the best of them yet show emotion and intellect at the same time. BUY THIS ALBUM!!!

Puzzled.

So on this album, you've got the bad, the good, and the weird. There's not much great on here. Some songs sound like Nickelback, others like Shadows Fall and the Mudvayne of old, and some somehow sound like Mastodon. The record starts out great, only to dissapoint. Buy the whole thing only if you're a hard-core fan.

Beautiful and Strange- 8/10. Mudvayne comes out of the gates roaring with a loud opener.
1000 Mile Journey- 6/10. Alright, but the vocals get seriously annoying after about a minute of listening to them. There seems to be a curious lack of melody, too.
Scfeam With Me- 7/10. Runs on the edge between new and old Mudvayne. The lyrics aren't that great.
Closer- 9/10. Closes (ha...ha) out the best part of the album. The lyrics still aren't great, but it's a nice shredder.
Heard It All Before- 4/10. Most accurate title ever. I can practically hear the majority of metalcore bands in the world almost being sampled at some point.
I Can't Wait- 6/10. Some pretty awesome drums, but the rest really leaves something to be desired.
Beyond the Pale- 5/10. Some more bad lyrics.
All Talk- 6/10. See 1000 Mile Journey.
Out to Pasture- 6/10. Alright, seriously. There needs to be meshing between the vocals and instrumentas, and on this album Mudvanye just can't seem to pull it off.
Burn the Bridge- 5/10. 1...2...3...GENERIC!!! In every possible way. Lyrics, drums, guitars, vocals...
Dead Inside- 4/10. The worst example yet of horrible interaction between the vocal and instrumentals. The instruments are drowned out every 5 seconds, only to reappear abruptly. Not Mudvayne's finest hour.

Just like the old days.

This reminds me completely of LD 50, I was disappointed with The New Game, and this is exactly what Mudvayne needed, to redeem themselves.. not only to me, but im sure alot of other people would agree. Great work here guys. Excellent job! Keep Rolling.
