England in the 16th century was a place of religious turbulence. Henry VIII broke with the pope but otherwise kept the English church essentially Catholic in both theology and worship. But then came Edward VI, who imposed a puritanical Protestantism. Mary then brought back Catholicism, pope and all. Finally, Elizabeth I set the Church of England on the "middle way" that, give or take, was to be its defining mark. Somehow, through all this, English composers turned out some of history's most sublime sacred music. The greatest works were settings of Latin texts, mostly for Roman Catholic services (at times virtually underground). But even after the Reformation, Latin was sung in royal and university chapels where the language would be understood. This CD samples music for Compline, the last of the daily monastic offices, by Thomas Tallis, Thomas Sheppard and William Byrd. Some of it is fairly straightforward and chordal, but most has voices overlapping voices in the luxurious counterpoint that early on gave English music a reputation for sonorous richness. All is gorgeously sung here, with pure tone and expressive manner, by Stile Antico, a 13-voice British ensemble; only some slowish tempos detract. Both voices and the properly churchy reverberation are beautifully captured. Scott Cantrell
Music or Compline
As close to perfection as I've heard, simply spellbinding in their talent and purity of voice. I'm not a huge fan of classical music, but this album is so incredible you can't help but realize you're experiencing something astounding.
Nice Choral Stuff
I love good choral music... this reminds me of that "Chant" album that came out a while back. Really nice meditative listening. If you like this, you should also check out Kerry Muzzey's "Burying Our Dead" from the TRAILER MUSIC cd -- similary tonal and beautiful, but with a more lush feeling. You can't go wrong with either composer!
