After professing his love for Gossip, producer Rick Rubin got his wish and committed the garrulous garage rock threesome to tape. For a band used to recording albums in hours, Gossip had the luxury to sculpt a set of songs with a producer who’s coaxed career-changing performances (Johnny Cash, Neil Diamond, Beastie Boys, Red Hot Chili Peppers). Rubin works similar magic on Music for Men, peeling back the rough exterior and exposing the heartbeat underneath Gossip’s transformative rock ‘n’ roll mayhem. Vocalist Beth Ditto and guitarist Brace Paine work in tandem to build walls sweating with emotion and verve. “Love Long Distance,” "Men In Love," and “Pop Goes the World” shows Gossip’s sharpened disco pedigree with percussion and keyboards providing ample lift for Ditto’s clever wordplay. Music for Men scrapes its nails across rock, soul, gospel, dance, drawing blood and leaving an indelible mark.

The best album of 2009

After a long wait, Gossip deliver the goods on their major label debut. It's a major step up in songwriting, production (courtesy of Rick Rubin), and swagger, a batch of songs that rocks and pops like nothing else out there right now. There is not a weak song in the lot. Highlights include the dark and moody opener "Dimestore Diamond," the slinky "Vertical Rhythm" and the ballistic first single "Heavy Cross." And if "Love Long Distance" isn't a HUUUUUUGE hit, then something is definitely wrong with this world. This is an album that's going to please the longtime fans, but it's also got the mass appeal chops to make it an actual big honkin' hit record. The world is ready for Beth Ditto to be a star!

Hot Damn!!!!

WOW! Where has this band nbeen hiding from me??? I am certainly now a big fan and will be going and buying their older stuff for sure. The music is really fantastic...great guitars and energizing beats...really a great drummer. I see the correlation to Dolly Parton. However, Dolly on crack is little bit of a stretch, but angry Dolly amped up on testosterone and cocaine, definitely! Although I am generally not a fan of female power vocals, this was very nicely produced so that her voice is perfectly buried in the music, acting as simply another instrument, rather than overpowering the great music it is a part of. Very well done. Would love to see her do something with Linda Perry I had to re-post this and upgrade it from 4 to 5 stars....it is that much fun to listen to!

Originally from Searcy, Arkansas, this punk trio moved to Olympia, WA, joining the roster of the indie rock label K Records. Guitarist Nathan (aka Brace Paine), drummer Kathy, and singer Beth proclaimed, "We started a band 'cause we were bored. Our mission is to make you dance, and if you're not gonna dance, just stay at home and listen to the oldies station." K released a self-titled 7" in 1999, and their full-length debut, That's Not What I Heard, was distributed by Kill Rock Stars in late 2000....
