Other Joys, Yoga, Jai Uttal, & Ben Leinbach

Rich veins of varied traditions inform this synthesis of reverent and restorative music, useful, but more, actually attuned to what seems to be the meditative yoga entrainment frequencies, I was caught up immediately by, this, another powerful production of Jai Uttal and Ben Leinbach. Jai's deep spiritual centering in his spiritual chanting practice is brought into the mind of the listener, as Leinbach with his studio engineering artistry caress the practice of yoga, as well as OTHER JOYS! I'm reminded of a story of Jai's younger days when circumambulating the holy city of Vrindavan, the town that was home to the young Lord Krishna and His beloved Radha, Jai was walking along Parikrama Road, when a elderly temple dweller's sound stopped Jai, they visited, transcendent spiritual knowledge was exchanged in the milieu of all encompassing song and dance, filling Jai with a world-view of constant participation in an unbroken river of consciousness that has extended back across the ages uninterrupted--this march of spiritual consciousness is here presented in a format for meditative listening, spiritual beneficence, zestfully modern as well as elegantly traditional. One need know only a bit about Jai's early music (classical piano, banjo, guitar, others) and his initiation into Kirtan and other chant modalities when he moved to India at 17 to find here a synthesis that is joyful and peaceful, evocative and integrative. In LOVELAND I found his celbrative chant ability exciting, and in this album Jai pulls the listener off into the yogin's chambers. There is a hint of Andreas Vollenweider - Caverna Magica on one track, whereas my New Orleans Jazz roots are welcomed on others, but always the synthesis is highly yogic. For many years I longed for someone who could evoke as Ravi Shankar did, and I really believe Jai's chant is of that caliber.

Perfect for Massage

This was the only CD I used in my massage practice. It has the perfect combination of gentle, hypnotic rhythm and free associative improvisation.

I never tire of hearing this one

I use it both in my massage sessions and my yoga classes. One massage client did ask me to change it, because she wanted something with a little more abstract flowy type of feel, but definitely fine for yoga classes and just getting a relaxing groove on. Some of this album has a "beat," with a steady tempo but not a raucous kind of rhythm that takes over the song. They played this in a yoga class at Kripalu Yoga Center, which is where I bought it, and I rely on it for my yoga classes as well as with some massage clients.
