iTunes Review

The ensuing years since the Jayhawks emergence in the late-‘80s-early-‘90s have made their alt-country and honeyed power pop an essential building block for an entire movement that continues to mine old-time country-western and folk with the rock and pop values of the ‘60s and the punk spirit of the ‘80s. Led by Gary Louris and Mark Olson, the Jayhawks featured harmonies and sweet melodic surprises rooted in the past but with an eye towards the future. No mere retro act, over seven studio albums and various line-up changes that saw Olson leave the band, the Jayhawks compiled a stack of impeccable tunes that in another era would’ve been world-class hits. Instead, aside from the occasional breakthrough (“Waiting for the Sun,” “Blue”), most of their accomplishments were left only to their burgeoning cult following. The Anthology is offered in two volumes. The first features a 20-track chronological compilation of their strongest tunes, while the “deluxe” throws together another 20 tracks, including 14 previously unreleased gems.

Smorgasboard for the Jayhawk fan

If you're much of a Jayhawk fan at all, you've probably got the first disc. It's still nice to have some of their best work together on one disc for a drive or for work. The second disc is made up of demos, B-sides and songs that just didn't quite make it to the albums. Set up as the first disc, the first ten songs cover the Mark Olson period of the band, with the second ten songs covering 1997-2003. The interesting part for me is the work-in-progress nature of the second disc. You get the original version of Two Angels in the song "Old Woman From Red Clay," and a two-stepping version of "A Break in the Clouds" from the Smile album with "Stone Cold Mess." Also, you get to hear the original version of "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me," also from Smile, with the superior (to me, anyway) "Someone Will." The set includes some B-sides like "Darling Today," the B-side to the song "Blue." Also included is one track from the mysterious 1986 Bunkhouse album in "Falling Star." Non-album gems like "In the Canyon," "I Can Make It on my Own," and "Get the Load Out" grace this set as well. It's a generous helping of works in progress and roads not taken. If you're a fan, you should have this, and since it's on Itunes you can preview and get what you want. It's all good.

If you have to have a Jayhawks anthology album...

...then I suppose this one's as good as any you could make yourself (assuming you're a true fan and have all of their albums anyway). There's no denying all of the songs culled from their albums on disc one are solid hits (though, personally, I was never crazy about "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me," but I certainly understand why it's included here.) The real reason to purchase this is, of course, for the b-sides and demos and alt. versions contained on disc two. It's so exciting to hear previously unreleased Jayhawks songs like these (not to mention the ones contained on the stellar remastered rereleases of "Hollywood Town Hall" and, especially, "Tomorrow the Green Grass"). I finally picked up "The Bunkhouse Album" today, and it only proves how essential it is for any diehard Jayhawks fan to gather up everything these guys released (preferably before Mark Olson's departure). Now I guess they've rejoined and are releasing a double album in September. Somebody pinch me...

The Greatest

Back in the '90's I ran a very cool record store in Knoxville, Tn, and was lucky enough to meet, and become good friends with the band. Hanging out with the Jayhawks after a killer show on their bus is one of my greatest memories. Every time they came to town, Gary would call my store to make sure I was coming to the show. This release really does it all for me. Great music from great guys!

Led by the gifted songwriting, impeccable playing, and honeyed harmonies of vocalists/guitarists Mark Olson and Gary Louris, the Jayhawks' shimmering blend of country, folk, and bar band rock made them one of the most widely acclaimed artists to emerge from the alternative country scene. The group sprang up in 1985 out of the fertile musical community of Minneapolis, Minnesota, where Olson had been playing standup bass in a rockabilly band called Stagger Lee. His desire to write and perform his own...
