Feel It In Your Veins...

Bay Area-based trio's first full length outing is even more enigmatic and surprising than their first effort, 2005's self-titled EP. Without pesky lyrics to get in the way, one can truly appreciate the sonic landscape of Parker Street Cinema and the concept of an instrumental album in general. Part rock opera, part noise rock MUSIC, IN THE BLOOD switches it up so often that's impossible to be a passive listener. This is not some album that you throw on as background music or play behind a DJ as he rattles off the morning's play list. You can play Parker Street Cinema at your next party, but don't be surprised if it shows up as a guest, beer in hand, of course. It is hard to imagine that a musical narrative constructed solely out of a bass, a drum set and a piano can take someone on such an adventure. But just buy it, you'll see.

Something Different...Finally

I listen to a lot of music, but now I'm thinking I don't listen to enough instrumental music. It's a different experience to get deeply into the music instead of floating on the surface where the singing is. This band even takes the guitar out and leaves it to the keyboard to craft its sweet melodies. And therein lies the tension with this band: to paraphrase the inimitable Charles Bukowski on "Something About the Audience," the melodies are good, but something about the rhythm section is not. To make up for the lack of a guitar, the bass player has to play rhythm *and* lead, which he does seamlessly and in a number of styles. Blood Music is the rocker and is not to be missed. The only song with lyrics (but not singing) is the aforementioned Bukowski track. Parking Ticket Patriot, however, is the standout track. This album is a worthy follow-up to their overlooked debut EP, and I look forward to hearing their progression.
