About as close to Middle-Earth as one could get to musically...

From the beginning track, I can hear Ian McKellan's voice saying "In the lands of Middle-Earth, legend tells of a Ring...". David's work on this album does in some cases capture the essence of what music from Middle-Earth (although I think if it were to sound like anything, it'd be more of a celtic sort of sound). In many ways, the soundscapes he's created play off of the different characters and emotions each one's going through. "The Quest" for example, you can feel Aragorn's choice to carry out his destiny in the drum beats, along with Frodo who's marching off to accomplish the impossible task he's been burdened to fulfill. However, aside from a couple of very good tracks (namely Prelude, The Quest, Lothlorien, and The Riders of Rohan), the rest of it feels like it's very out of place, and leaves you kind of skipping ahead to the next part of the journey. There are parts of this album that sound like an overdone synth scored fantasy movie from the 80's. If you're looking for something to compete with the work of Howard Shore, this isn't it. I will admit that I got this album after hearing the scores of Howard Shore, and I already had his themes in my head, so I wasn't really prepared to hear any other type of theme as to what Rohan should sound like, or Isengard, or Gondor for that matter. I just didn't want to hear it. But after some time, this album really grew on me, and I find myself listening to this a lot when I'm driving to work in the very early morning. It does kind of give me that feeling like I'm crossing The Shire (I'm a geek, sorry). All in all, it's definately worth a shot. Be bold, give it a whirl!

I'm a sucker for everything LotR-ish

I admit it, I would still have bought this album even if I didn't know about David Arkenstone or even that this was New Age-y music. I would have downloaded it solely because of it's title. I love the Lord of the Rings books, movies, sound tracks and games (board and video). I would love to live in Rivendale, cavort around Lothlórien or dine on rabbit stew with Frodo and Sam just outside of Mordor. I will buy anything that transports me to that world. And this album does. It is different enough from the movie sound tracks to justify buying it. The sound is classic David Arkenstone. It's perfect for background music while working or sipping wine with friends. I give it a thumbs up.

Music worthy of God

I cannot think of another record or cd that is so beautiful, simple, or as relaxing as this album. The composition rivals the skills of James Horner (Braveheart, Zorro, and Troy) Howard Shore (Lord of the Rings) and Klaus Badelt (Pirates of the Caribbean). This is true classical music and a wonderful work of art that Tolkien would have been proud of himself. Track lineup: Prelude: 5/5 wonderful sound The Road to Rivendell: 3/5 happy and pleasant song but by far not the best on the Cd The Quest: 6/5 absolutely the best song I have ever heard. starts slow but picks up and becomes a dazzling composure Moria: 3/5 a long slow sad song Lothlorien: 4/5 beautiful song but not one of my personal favorites Galadriel’s Mirror: 3/5 good song with backup vocals in it The Riders of Rohan: 5/5 Amazing song. One of the best on the album The Palantir: 3/5 another good song…sounds like Galadriels Mirror though Arwen and Aragorn: 4/5 great song with simple, beautiful composure To Isengard: 5/5 Great song…one that might be heard before a great battle In the Land of Shadow: 2/5 it fits its name quite well but is not that great in comparison with others The Fields of Cormallen: 5/5 upbeat song with a great tune The Grey Havens: 5/5 sad but wonderful song. great way to close the Cd and fits its name perfectly
