iTunes Review

Mutineer is often considered one of Warren Zevon’s lesser inspired releases. Wrong, wrong, wrong. It’s an intimate look at a man who often used the most professional of Los Angeles session players to build his sound. Here in his home studio, Zevon is free to wander as he feels fits. The songwriting is stellar and the cover of Judee Sill’s “Jesus Was a Cross Maker” is years ahead of its time. (Sill’s resurgence was a long time coming). “The Indifference of Heaven,” the highlight of the solo live album Learning to Flinch, is a powerful piece of personal philosophy. “Monkey Wash Donkey Rinse” is exactly the kind of quirky folk song that Zevon could always deliver. “Mutineer” is Zevon at his most romantic and self-mythologizing. “Seminole Bingo” is the flipside, white-collar crooks on the lam. “Something Bad Happened to a Clown” features a top-notch Zevon vocal performance. Zevon was a ruthless yet tenderhearted songwriter who always found a unique way around the same old tried-and-true chords of rock ‘n’ roll. It’s time to rediscover this lost classic.

Well, maybe three and a half

Although his personal life and career were at something of a nadir, Warren Zevon managed to cobble together some strong material for this album--even if no one noticed. Given the paucity of his catalogue, a fan of his music is probably going to want at least some of these songs; Indifference, Monkey Wash and Mutineer are essential in a Warren Zevon collection, I think, and most of the rest are nice enough with Seminole Bingo, Piano Fighter, and Rottweiler being good examples of WZ's sardonic humor.

Mature Zevon

I may be in the minority here, but this is and has been one of my favourite Zevon albums. True there are no gimmicky sing along songs; rather they're the voice of someone who's been up and down the road but still standing. The Indifference of Heaven indeed! Do yourselves a favour and listen to them with a fresh heart.

Well...

While early on this may have seemed like a less than equal album compared to the earlier releases, however on reflection I'm exceedingly grateful that Warren Zevon has a diverse discography. People pan the Mutineer for not being the same as every other album on his rack, but the reason people are drawn to him is the fact he was never a stagnant artist. Self indulgent is a good thing when done in moderation, which is what we've got here.

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s

One of the most acute and savagely satiric songwriters of his era, Warren Zevon was born in Chicago on January 24, 1947. His formative years were as colorful as the scenarios played out in his music: his father was a professional gambler, a lifestyle which forced the family to move frequently, and Zevon spent most of his formative years in California and Arizona. He learned to play piano, focusing primarily on classical material before a disintegrating home life led him into pop music, as well as...
