Album Review

Mutiny Within are a New Jersey-based band combining power metal and thrash into a pleasingly epic blend. They're not as nonsensical or dependent on stunts as Dragonforce, though their guitar and keyboard skills are impressive — the element Mutiny Within has on their side is actual songwriting. These tracks have dynamics, constantly shifting the mood and keeping things interesting. Perhaps the most interesting thing about their music is that it reflects their youth — they're not just sticking to the traditional power metal style as practiced by bands from Helloween on down, but are adding nu-metal and death metal sounds. Some of this stuff sounds as influenced by Linkin Park as by Hammerfall, or whoever. Vocalist Chris Clancy is able to shift seamlessly back and forth between a clean tone reminiscent of Queensrÿche's Geoff Tate and a harsh death growl that, in context, is a little less convincing, not particularly well-suited to the shredtastic material. Keyboardist Andrew Stavola is as important as the guitarists to the songs' structure, adding delicate piano melodies at times, and crazed synth blats at other moments. The drumming is ultra-triggered and artificial-sounding, but that kind of impeccable gleaming surface is what power metal's all about, so it's expected. And the production is great for the genre, giving the album an epic feel somewhere between an anime soundtrack and arena metal glory. This is an assured, skillful debut that demonstrates a lot of promise for the future.

Outstanding

Mutiny Within have an amazing, unique sound, that combines metal's technical side(Children of Bodom, Symphony X) with metal's more stripped-down sounds (metallica, pantera). And above all, vocalist Chris Clancy is brilliant and flawless in his more clean vocal-oriented approach to the songs. His instantly memorable melodies are what elevate Mutiny Within's sound to a whole other level of musical depth. As a metal fan, it is truly refreshing to hear a vocalist who really knows how to sing, rather than metal's generic screaming vocals, which, while they are effective, have become rather monotonous. Much like other established metal acts such as Black Sabbath, Pantera, and Children of Bodom, Mutiny Within's music has a completely original sound that is unmistakably their own, and this element is what instantly puts them ahead of the pack, and on a path to true metal greatness. Mutiny Within has a chance to become a hugely successful and inspirational band, if their future releases are able to match the musical genius of this self-titled debut.

Awesome, Epic Metal

I discovered these guys after Mike Portnoy and John Petrucci liked them, saying they would be great for Dream Theater fans. After giving this album a few listens, I'd say this is a pretty good assessment; both bands play dense, extremely technical metal with a thick, epic sound. While Dream Theater is influenced (at least originally) by progressive rock, however, Mutiny Within blends prog metal with metalcore for shorter, heavier songs that blend excellent clean vocals with screams. The guitars are top-notch; they combine with precision drumming for awesome riffage in Suffocate. A definite must-listen for fans of Dream Theater (particularly modern Dream Theater), Killswitch Engage, or similar bands.

WOW!!

As a long time fan of metal mutiny within has really brought back what true metal sounds like. Yes it would be nicer if they scream more but I think the fact that they don't really sets them apart from the crowd. This album was a great debut and if these guys don't get noticed for big time things then I will be truely ashamed. I think they really have the potiental to do that and bring metal out of it's dark stereotype. I hope they come out with more albums soon because I can't wait.
