iTunes Review

Although initially considered a country singer, Lovett excels at smuggling sentiments over conventional genre lines. He sings blues, gospel, folk-just about anything his voice and ace back-up band can handle. He then informs his music with a dangerous wit and eye for subtle detail. He's also apparently hit a bout of writer's block, since Tolerate was his first album of new material in seven years. As a Lovett album, it has a lighter touch, irony being replaced by genuine sentiment. The songs bounce with less hidden meaning ("The Truck Song"), less clouds in the sky ("In My Own Mind" embraces the quietude of aging), and more simple unadulterated joy ("San Antonio Girl"). By the time you get to the two closing gospel numbers ("I'm Going to Wait," "I'm Going To The Place"), you're conditioned to finally accept that the twist in Lovett's songwriting this time is that there isn't one. For once he's singing what he means and meaning what he sings.

Diamonds in the Rough

"In my own Mind" is my favorite. If the entire album had this thread running through it, man, this might be a classic record. "The Truck Song" is another keeper. "San Antonio Girl", yes. I think Lyle is one of the true artist and he is always worth the hard eanred cash. I just wish he would stick to the country/cowboy tunes. The other stuff is better than most, but it's not what makes the compliations. That said, this is a really good album.

I Love It

Mr. Lovett has a very interesting style. Actually, this is my first time hearing him. I wouldn't mind hearing something of his for 2006 or later sometime. I really like 'My Baby Don't Tolerate'. It made me smile for some reason and had that beat I enjoy. Yes, I really like your voice Mr. Lovett.

My Baby Don't Tolerate

This is one of his best...!

Lyle Lovett was one of the most distinctive and original singer/songwriters to emerge during the '80s. Though he was initially labeled as a country singer, the tag never quite fit him. Lovett had more in common with '70s singer/songwriters like Guy Clark, Jesse Winchester, Randy Newman, and Townes Van Zandt, combining a talent for incisive, witty lyrical detail with an eclectic array of music, ranging from country and folk to big-band swing and traditional pop. Lovett's literate, multi-layered songs...
