Album Review

A young singer, Abbie Gardner has a pleasing voice and swings while sticking close to the vintage lyrics and melodies that she interprets. Clearly, her most important inspiration is her father, veteran swing pianist Herb Gardner, who also contributes background vocals on a few numbers. They perform 13 tunes that are mostly from the late 1920s and early '30s, assisted greatly by the fluent and creative playing of Dan Levinson on clarinet (where his sound is just a little reminiscent of Tony Parenti) and tenor. Some of the numbers are warhorses but a few others "("Happy Feet," "Under a Blanket of Blue" and "Your Mother's Son-in-Law" in particular) are not performed all that often. Clearly, father and daughter had a fun time performing this music. The final two numbers — a tribute to Herb's home ("Staten Island") and the humorous "Gunshots and Sirens" — feature Herb on a pair of good-time vocals. This CD is easy to enjoy and shows that Abbie Gardner is a singer with strong future potential.

Customer Reviews

Excellent

I stumbled across this album today, and I haven't been able to stop listening to it. Please Don't Talk about Me when I'm Gone is an instant favorite, but the entire album is splendid. Credit to the excellent, swinging vocals, but the backing instrumentation is also top notch work.

Very fun

Abbie sings well and her band swings. Please Don't Talk and Them There Eyes are wonderful. Sometimes really good jazz gives you the feeling that the musicians were playing so well they were suppressing giggles the whole time. This feels like that. You gotta tap your feet, you gotta bob your head, you gotta smile. It's something special.

2008 Lennon Award Winners

I received the John Lennon Songwriting newsletter today with the winners of the 2008 Lennon Awards, and as a huge fan of "Lilith Fair" type folk (for a lack of a better description) I immediately went straight to Abbie Gardner. Beautiful song, beautiful lyrics, beautiful voice, and completely deserving of taking first place in her chosen category. Best of luck to you Abbie, I am off to buy your CD!!

Years Active: '00s

Abbie Gardner is an excellent young singer who, due to her upbringing, sounds very comfortable performing vintage swing standards that were popular decades before her birth. She grew up around jazz since her father, pianist Herb Gardner, had played with Roy Eldridge and Gene Krupa. She played violin for a year, extensively studied classical flute, and today also plays guitar and Dobro. As a singer, she was a member of the Boston University Inner Strength Gospel Choir, worked with a cappella groups,...
