iTunes Review

If What’s the 411? introduced Mary J. Blige’s attitude and spellbinding vocal talents, then My Life proved the depth and complexity of her art. Blige refuses to show the evolution of a relationship in chronological terms; rather than adhere to the rules of album-making, she remains truthful to life, which doesn’t compartmentalize feelings. My Life is extraordinary because it expresses elation, desperation, affection, and depression — often in the same moment. The album’s songs refer to different segments of soul music history. “Mary Jane (All Night Long)” blends elements of the Mary Jane Girls and Teddy Pendergrass; “You Bring Me Joy” samples Barry White; the title track borrows from Roy Ayers’ “Everybody Loves the Sunshine.” The lyrics were penned entirely by Blige, and the album’s story is told in her performance. She conveys emotion with such nakedness and intensity that it often feels like we are sharing her experiences in real time. Her fearlessness culminates in the album’s lone cover — a reading of Rose Royce’s 1976 “I’m Going Down” that turns a previously harmless love ballad into an epic, elegant statement of despair.

The best of our generation

Mary J. is no doubt one of the most influential artist in recent decades. When you look at the other female artists that came out around her time...look at who has stood the test of time. The difference is that Mary came into our lives with her music and let us know that she was in pain, flawed, and had work to do. Because of her honesty, her fans never left her and went through the struggle with her. Other artist came out trying to pretend that they were something that they were not. And when we saw who they really were, a lot of fans lost respect for them. Lesson: Be who you are and dont be afraid to let others know what's going on. You might be surprised to find that we all have some of the same struggles.

THANK YOU MARY!

WE LOVE YOU

One of the best R&B albums I have ever heard.

This album is amazing. It reeks of the 90's in a great and nostalgic way. I found out about this album because one of my all time favorite artist, Utada Hikaru, listened to this album three times a day after school. When she was a kid of course. Utada stated that she couldn't live without this album. I can understand why because this album is like I have said, amazing. I enjoy every song in this album especially the first nine songs. I have to give it five stars and I must say that this is Mary at her highest point of her career.

When her debut album, What's the 411?, hit the street in 1992, critics and fans alike were floored by its powerful combination of modern R&B with an edgy rap sound that glanced off of the pain and grit of Mary J. Blige's Yonkers, NY, childhood. Called alternately the new Chaka Khan or new Aretha...
