iTunes Review

On her sophomore release Melody Gardot continues to luxuriate in sultry moods and yearning sensations. This Philadelphia-based singer/songwriter reaffirms her substantial talent again and again in these tracks, inviting comparisons with everyone from Laura Nyro to Norah Jones. On the surface, Gardot is a classic jazz chanteuse — her rich-toned voice and superbly controlled vibrato are very old school in feel. Certainly, tunes like “Baby I’m a Fool,” “Your Heart Is As Black As Night,” and the title tune have the smoldering elegance of pre-rock balladry. But Gardot goes beyond mere traditionalism in poetic, emotionally probing tunes like “The Rain” and “Deep Within the Corners of My Mind.” Throughout, there are intimations of suffering and resolve — even comparatively light numbers like “Our Love Is Easy” reveal aching depths. Vince Mendoza’s billowy strings enhance Gardot’s performances. Sublimely cool yet passionate, My One and Only Thrill is an act of sustained aural seduction.

quiet dark mystery

I love Melody's voice and the songs and arrangements are well suited to her voice. it's a pretty voice, with dark undertones. pair this with Eddie Skuller's tribute to jimmy scott, if you also like a bit of dark in your beautiful!

Beautifully Perfect.

This is the album I have been waiting for. I am a huge jazz fan, and have been waiting for a silky-smooth, nighttime, anytime, jazz record. Gardot's voice is amazing - smooth, subtle and sexy. Many compare her to Norah Jones - I find this insulting. Gardot writes most of her songs, plays guitar and piano on all her tracks, and has so much class and originality. And she can scat! And it sounds good! I would instead say that she has the sexy voice quality of Julie London, and her songs range from sassy-swing to chill-out fantastic. I highly, highly, highly recommed this album.

stars

anyone who dosent give this record 5 stars simply dosent believe in perfection. that is reluctantly acceptable. anyone who does not give it 4 stars needs to get checked. im a working musician , i dont play jazz for a living but i say this: melody gardot is the one and only thrill in the business today!
