Album Review

The reasons for Tarja Turunen's forced departure from Finnish power metal giants Nightwish remain unclear. The singer was unceremoniously dumped via an open letter, posted online, citing changes in her personality and business interests. Since then both parties have been surprisingly evasive about the subject, and many were hoping that Turunen would shed some light on the subject through her music. My Winter Storm, Tarja's first album of original material since the split, sees the singer lyrically defiant, but unwilling to deviate too much from the operatic metal style of her former posse. Now recording simply as Tarja, My Winter Storm topped the Finnish charts immediately upon its release, driven by the Mozart-inspired lead single "I Walk Alone." Overall, the album is softer and more reflective than her previous work, which tends to be the case when lead singers leave niche bands to pursue solo stardom, but the record is hampered by the compromise between her old and new styles. Clearly, Tarja wishes to branch out musically. She achieves this splendidly with "Oasis," a haunting symphonic opera track in her native tongue, the only composition credited solely to the singer. However, barring a couple of notable exceptions, including the single "Die Alive" and the thrashy "Ciarán's Well," the heavy metal aspect of My Winter Storm seems more of an afterthought than an integral element. They're straightforward pop rock songs with ill-fitting thrash riffs as a token gesture to fans, and as a result Tarja the singer never really gives herself a chance to shine.

she doesn't need nightwish.

Tarja's solo career is off to a wonderful start. I'm so happy for her and so happy to hear such amazing music from her once again. When she and Nightwish parted ways, i was quite sad, but this cd makes up for any sadness i felt. The cd starts off with "Ite, Missa Est" & "I Walk Alone". that song is brilliant to me. The music is superb and Tarja's voice has never sounded better. "Lost Northern Star" is also great. At first listen I was a little unsure, but it really grew on me. "Seeking the Reign" & "The Reign" are gorgeous. You can really hear Tarja's Operatic tones in this and it takes you to a whole new world. "The Escape of the Doll" & "My Little Phoenix".... definately one of my favorites. The way her voice soars, you can see the phoenix taking flight and being consumed in flames. Its soft, yet intense and so powerful. I highly recomend this song (the music is superb as well) "Die Alive" is a great song. I don't know if its a favorite, but its definately up there. I absolutely love the climactic orchestral/choral piece near the end. It makes the song for me. "Boy and the Ghost" is heart-wrenching. And the choir is AMAZING. and again... as with every song on this album, Tarja's voice is beautiful and really at its finest (dare i say... better than when she was in Nightwish). "Sing for Me" is again... beautiful and heart-wrenching. And it also has amazing choir. What can i say... i'm a sucker for the choirs. "Oasis" is probably one of the most beautiful songs on the album. It almost has a flicker of Lord Of The Rings in it.... i love it. That's all i have to say. "Poison" is a cover. Not too bad... Not a favorite, but i like it. "Our Great Divide" is very gorgeous. Not much more to say about it. "Sunset" & "Damned and Divine" is yet another of my favorites. Tarja and songs about Vampires? perfect! Its somewhat haunting, but still holds the beauty the rest of the album establishes. "Ciaran's Well".... hmm... i don't know about this one. I love the guitar, but i'm not so fond of the singing in this. Its maybe one of the only ones i don't care for. "Minor Heaven" ..... wonderful. "Calling Grace" is... eh. I didn't really get it. It didn't really fit with the rest of the album, in my opinion. Its ok, i guess. so yes. sorry to leave you on a negative review with "Calling Grace"... dont' be fooled. I love this CD very much and i'm so so proud of Tarja's growth and i'm glad to see her up and singing. I hope she kicks it real good to Nightwish. Here's a big HOORAY for Tarja. May your next CD be a million times for epic. I know you have it in you.

Wow...

I am a major fan of Nightwish, and I hated them kicking out Tarja. I respect Tarja so deeply, I think she has one of the greatest voices I've ever heard. After listening to tracks such as "Sing For Me" and "The Reign," I can't believe how much I love her voice even more. My jaw dropped at the sound of them, I now know she has a much better voice than I thought before! I miss a lot of the symphonic metal, even though there is some on this album, but she has a nice vocal area of the tracks that is wonderful. Keep it up, Tarja!

Great album

Tarja has not abandoned her metal/rock influences which is evident in such songs as "Lost Northern Star", "Die Alive", "Poison" and "Ciaran's Well", but we see more of her classical influences here. The best track is called "Oasis", which is written by Tarja herself, sung in finnish. My Winter Storm would be a perfect album if Tarja had narrowed some of the songs down to about 11 or 12 because some of them seems like filler tracks. I didn't really like the interludes either. BTW, itunes decided to reissue this album since it just came out in the U.S (released here digitally last November) along with the bonus tracks. You Would Have Loved This is from her 2006 Christmas album and Damed Vampire and Gothic Divine is a extended version of track #15.
