Fresh and innovative
Sam Yahel is one of the freshest voices in modern jazz. These interpretations of Shorter's work are all superb. Listening to Sam Yahel makes you realize that the Hammond B3 is one of the most exciting instruments in jazz today. Highly recommended!
another underrated gem from Chesky
This group should really record another album. Bob Belden's tasteful arrangements of eight Wayne Shorter originals provide the perfect setting for this crack quintet to make some great music. Nicholas Payton's bluesy bravura on "Tom Thumb" and "Witch Hunt" is reminiscent of Freddie Hubbard, while his sensitive interpretation of "Teru" calls Shorter's own phrasing style to mind. Sam Yahel, John Hart, and Billy Drummond work so tightly together that the listener barely notices the absence of a bass, and Belden's tenor and soprano are strong as ever, full of life and joy. A great record all around.
