iTunes Review

Phil Keaggy and Randy Stonehill never got over the ’60s — which, judging by 2009’s Mystery Highway, is a good thing. These two Christian music pioneers bring a sunny hippie vibe to this joyfully rocking team-up. Forty years on, Keaggy and Stonehill continue to match an enduring affection for classic pop/rock with an unshakable faith in God. “Who’s Your Driver,” “Backwards On Her Bike,” “We’ll Meet Again” and “Irresistable Future” have the bouncy abandon of vintage Beatles tunes, propelled forward by acoustic guitars and closely matched harmonies. Stonehill’s ear for lyric detail and skewed sense of humor assert themselves in tracks like the title number and “Rockman” (the latter featuring Randy’s oddball approach to rap). Keaggy contributes a revised version of his “Sunday’s Child” and lays down some tasty psychedelic licks on “Dreamspeak.” The whimsical “Picture Postcard Perfect Day” and the lightly funky “Soul Girl” capture the album’s understated approach to spiritual themes. Mystery Highway celebrates Phil and Randy’s love for tunefully positive music, rendered (as always) in the service of the Lord.

They've still got it....

I have been following this project for about a year now and it is finally here!!! Randy and Phil go back to their roots creating songs that are very bluesy, beatlesque, rocky, and even a slight twinge of bakersfield country....but barely. What comes out is not a Phil Keaggy record and not a Randy Stonehill record, but something different, something fun, something that you can put in the radio and drive and just enjoy. Phil doesn't saturate the record with his guitar, but it's still very prominent. Their vocals go well together and most important, you can tell these old friends are having a good time...and isn't that what music is about? Good job guys!!!

Mystery Highway

Having heard a live preview, I was already excited to hear this CD, and I was NOT disappointed! I've played it so many times, I've memorized most of the words. This is good old rock and roll fine-tuned by the experts. "Who's Your Driver" and "Picture Postcard Perfect Day" are examples of Randy Stonehill's lyrical genius. These are the songs he does best! "Love Is Not the Only Thing" is a beautiful love song---about the kind of love that lasts a lifetime. There are a couple of songs that have already been recorded before, but there isn't a song on here I don't like. They're all great! "Irresistible Future" is---well---irresistible. One of my favorites. Musically, this CD is exceptional with beautiful harmonies. "Glass Harp", a group of Phil Keaggy's friends since he was in Junior High School, is the back-up band. Excellent work! Some of Mike Pachelli's guitar riffs are competitive with Keaggy's. Dare I say that? (Mr. Keaggy doesn't seem worried.) "Mystery Highway" is a fun album. Open your car windows, turn up the music, and enjoy the ride!

Better Than I Imagined It Might Be

I was a little hesitant to pick up this album, because I wasn't all that thrilled with Sunday's Child way back when. Didn't hate it...just didn't love it. But...I must say, I absolutely love this album. I've had it for 3 weeks, and have probably listened to it around 50 times. It's a blend of early Beatles-ish, rockabilly...I don't know what. All I know is that it's really well-written, and has an acoustically-driven sound that's filled out nicely with electric guitar, drums and vocals. Very fresh and clean, and not at all like anything else I own. I've been a fan of both Phil and Randy since the Seventies. Phil's melodies and guitar work are like no one else I've ever heard. Randy is the consummate entertainer...from his painfully vulnerable lyrics, to his highly accessible (but never cheesy) melodies, to the class clown persona that keeps popping out just at the right time (and shows up a couple time here in ways that will make you smile, or more likely, bust out laughing). Both these men are among the very best concerts I've seen in my entire life. I don't take the time to get out to live music much anymore, but I've heard they've been doing some touring together. If they show up in this neck of the woods, I'll be there! This album is a blend of sweet sentiments of love, faith and good times. I consider this one of the finest albums I've purchased in years, and I'd really encourage anyone who's looking to sink their teeth into something special to pick it up as well. You'll enjoy yourself!

Phil Keaggy is an excellent all-around guitarist who has been a part of the CCM scene for over two decades. Born and raised in Ohio in a Catholic family of ten, Keaggy always loved music and spent hours listening to such singers as Johnny Ray and Elvis Presley. He began imitating the latter as young as age four. Keaggy was also exposed to other kinds of music and became well versed in classical. His first guitar was a late-'50s Gretsch Anniversary model; at age ten his father bought him a Sears Silvertone,...
