Album Review

Rickie Lee Jones "unplugged" — in fact, solo with an acoustic guitar or piano on all but a couple of tunes — Naked Songs is otherwise a retrospective concert album on which Jones cherry-picks songs from her five studio albums, including the hits "Chuck E.'s in Love" and "Young Blood," and others from her breakthrough debut record. The studio album arrangements always tried to support and augment Jones' idiosyncratic writing and playing style, which sounds less unusual when she is simply accompanying herself, and in many ways more effective. "Altar Boy," a previously unreleased song, strays into Leonard Cohen territory, mixing religion with eroticism.

Swear to god, it's the best music ever recorded.

Naked Songs

This is one of her best albums. It captures her in all of her sweet, wild, weird and soulful self, along with that magnetic connection that she has with her audiences. Rickie's really one of the foremothers of alterna-folk/jazz and an all around great musician - not to be missed.

Refreshing takes on RLJ classics

Not sure what ParValue was looking for when he downloaded RLJ, but it's clear that not enough people appreciate the significance and profoundness of artists like Rickie. Hers is probably one of the most distinct voices around - and this album shows it off in all its quirks, sweetness, and rawness. Listening to Naked Songs is the next best thing to going to her live concert. I particuarly enjoyed the guitar solo on "Chuck E".
She is an amazing storyteller, and a consummate musician (she writes and arranges her songs, remember!!). Her range of songwriting is amazing. Yeah, she most often sounds like she's singing next to a bottle of Johnnie Walker, but that's why we love her!
