Not surprised.

Knowing how this dude switches styles so often, I wasn't so shocked when first listening to this. This dude's just always pushin boundaries

Machinedrum keeps you on your toes...

We all have moments where either "one of the two or a few" things usually happens when you listen to an artist and the progress of their music. They have a body of work that starts off great and your love for their work only gets stronger as they can keep a constant stride with the following albums that come out as time goes on, but at some point they may slip and put a product out that does not complement with the others. Sometimes they bounce back, sometimes not. Or you have that artist that starts off weak to decent and surprises you with a stronger set of songs in a an album that makes up to a greater improvement, but more often than not, you know what solid respectable song count you are going to getting out of each album. An artist can keep a pace on a path you are comfortable with and some, where their careers are like the Rocky Mountains; up and down and all over the place!

A Tribe Called Quest always comes to mind when I think of these scenarios (no pun intended).
Bottom line: It all comes down to patterns.

Here you have Machinedrum. His work is all over the place and to be honest, the earlier albums had a more "too strange sound" for me in them than what I could groove to. But then you hear a track like, "Stevie Bam Jackson" or "Late Night Operation" and you get an idea of the talent Machinedrum has and what's on the offering table with the overall "vision" he has with sound. The 2011 "Rooms" album left me with a sense of him approaching that "Low End Theory" point in his career with his work to me. For my taste of music, he hasn't reached what I call: "The Midnight Marauders" status with an album yet, where I can listen to the album from start to finish and EVERY song is a classic.

I'm still waiting for that moment with Machinedrum. The Ep before this one gave me a stronger sense of hope that it could be possible. This one is in that same vein. "Nastyfukk" caught me from the door & finished as a strong example of what could be (though, it left me wishing he would have brought the drums back in to the song before he finished to incorporate more with the "Tangerine Dream-ish" change up at the end, but it still stands as a great bridging moment for a DJ to bring in another song should they decide to mix it in their showset. In my eyes, the song is that tight.).

The "No Schnitzel" remix track did NOT do it for me and it left deflated & exhausted me a bit with the loops, but "What U Wanted 2 Feel" (regular and remix version) left him with a solid finish for this Ep.

He hasn't pitched a perfect game with me yet, but I know he has it in him. Right now, I'm proud to say I'm a fan in the stands waiting to see that happen cheering, "C'mon Machinedrum! You can do it! Pitch that perfect 1." Stay tuned true believers.

P.S. : You and Lone' need to get in the lab with Mux Mool, Bullion, Prefuse 73, Flying Lotus or Madlib, shatter some minds and save the f**kin' galaxy with your finished product.
That is all.

expected awesomeness

i give this 4 instead of 5 stars is because, the main tracks - 'Nastyfuckk' & 'What U Wanted 2 Feel' - are awesome, while the remix tracks are just alright.

Biography

Genre: Electronic

Years Active: '00s

Of the many aliases attributed to Orlando, FL-based artist Travis Stewart (aka Syndrone, tstewart) Machine Drum is handily the most well-known. Although initially conceived as an outlet for Stewart's drill'n'bass meanderings, Machine Drum's first public release was a hazy, skittering melange that owed more to hip-hop and ambient than early Squarepusher. Indeed, the bursting "Izey Rael" would prove to be the template for Machine Drum's ensuing long-player. Recorded during the summer of 2000 through...
