Just Too Funny!
I had this album when it was first released, and in my haste to listen and enjoy, I missed who was performing on this one. John Belushi and Chevy Chase? Well, no wonder it was hysterically funny. A perfect spoof for Woodstock and the "lemming" mindset of the youth of that era. Blindly following whatever they are spoonfed by anyone other than the "establishment" of the day. Anything to be radical, and this one sure touches on all of that in a wry humor fashion. Pure Brilliant!
Great to see this classic again
I bought this album around 1980 mainly because I was heavily into National Lampoon around the OC and Stiggs era. I have seldom found such rare treasures on a whim. Belushi's and Chase's perfomances are unpolished but all the more brilliant while Christoper Guest foreshadows his satirical genius with a paraody of James Taylor that is both scathing and honorific. Such paradoxes seem almost necessary in this post modern send up of pop music from girl groups to early heavy metal, and the comedians' deconstruction of their own music idols seems appropriately disillusioned in a 1973 America that had seen the last gasp of the hippy movement but was still two years away from the fall of Saigon. Like Apocalypse Now and Fritz the Cat, this work provides an excellent window into the minds of a not so distant or different generation of youth that was struggling with the question of where to go next and whom to trust. Its humor is raw but its insights all the more candid, and I'm left wondering where today's comedic minds with similar insights are lurking and who is giving them a chance to speak.
Awesome!
Haven't thought of this in years, but along with "Chicken Fried Movie", "The Groove Tube" some of the best comedy ever!
