Album Review
Canada's Our Lady Peace makes a stunning debut with Naveed, almost avoiding the mid-'90s reign of Seattle's grunge. Mixing fierce melodies among '60s hard rock guitars, Our Lady Peace projects confidence, but is not as angry as Pearl Jam; however, they're abrasive and ready to rage against the corporate social machine. Percussion is tight, and frontman Raine Maida's lyrical poetry is also solid and wailing. Songs like "Supersatellite" and debut single "Starseed" gnarl with Maida's scratchy falsetto, which complements Mike Turner's riveting licks. They're anxious, and that's refreshing for a young band. They're not exactly hoping to define anything, but Our Lady Peace does wish to relish the rock & roll hardballers who came before them. "Hope" and "Denied" are both infectious with Zen-like rhythms similar to the likes of Led Zeppelin, making a definitive stance for the band. Our Lady Peace yearns to achieve a musical position, and Naveed is a decent introduction to the group's own musical spirituality.
Customer Reviews
our lady peace is totally underrated
i can't believe this album only has a couple of reviews! our lady peace is a great band and they never get the credit they deserve. i definitely reccomend this album to anyone who's a fan of the band already, if you're not, you may be better off checking out their album "clumsy" first.
A Little Known Classic
If you've heard of OLP before, you probably know them has a power rock/pop ballad band from hearing "Clumsy", "Superman's Dead", "Life", "Somewhere Out There" or "Innocent" on the radio. Nothing wrong with those songs, however, this OLP's 1st effort was indeed their best effort to date. A better balance of hard rockin' songs w/ slower ballads on this album than subsequent efforts. Three harder tracks that never saw the light of day "The Birdman", "Neon Crossing" and "Julia". Plus "Starseed" which saw some radio play. This is OLP's finest hour. Add it to your collection so that I can say "told you so!"
solid album, their finest hour
I remember seeing OLP in Montreal in the early 90s - they were opening for Blind Melon. There were maybe 40 people around, but they rocked the floor! This is by far their best effort - great lyrics, a lot of passion and damn they were so young when they punched this one out. I remember they had to print more copies of the CD back in the day because it sold so well. Get this one - you won't be disappointed!
