A Beautiful Revolution indeed!
Beautiful Revolution is a band formed by Kenny Pretty On Top Jr. (cool name, no?) He is a Crow native of Montana and -Near to You- is his first release.
Like many of its Christian music contemporaries, Beautiful Revolution captures the edge of alternate rock while presenting thoughtful and worship-heavy lyrics. The best comparisons I can think of are Jeremy Camp, Building 429, and Third Day. What impresses me most about Beautiful Revolution is their ability to create the *atmosphere* of worship in a studio session. This is notoriously hard to do without sounding fake or clichéd – and Beautiful Revolution manages both authenticity and earnestness.
For being a first album, the quality, both in technical excellence and songwriting, is incredibly high. The instrumentation balances very well with the vocals so that each element compliments the other and adds to the song as a whole. Kenny conveys a genuineness in both his writing and performance, and his work as a worship leader is apparent as you listen through the tracks.
Particular jewels on this album include “Everlasting Kiss,” “Deeper,” and “New Song.” All three of these provide a great sense of presence, and of studio worship music at its best. However, the title track by far takes the cake. “Near to You” contains all the elements of a successful rock ballad: soaring chord progressions, great lyrics, and a heart felt expression of earnest longing. Even if the genre is not your cup of tea, this song is worth giving a listen.
